The year 1984 and a new player was to come into the world of Action figures. Galoob Golden Girl. The market wide open after Filmation done the cartoons for He-Man and Mattel cash cow of MOTU. Some people seen a vast weakness in the market place? Where had the female heros been? Mattel with the original line had just made token effort towards female warriors there was at the time Just Teela and Evil-Lyn. The time was most ripe to step in with positive female super hero's. After all the 6 inch figures had been cheaper than barbies and Galloobs battle plan was to see how line had gone? It would have worked if Lou at Filmation had not got wind of this and we can thank Galoob for She-Ra Princess of power! Mattle was not one for letting anyone getting the better of them.
But my focus will be on my own line and collection, I will explain and review why in some ways a toy line ahead of its time and why it failed!
Galoob had missed the point when they began the Golden Girl Line, No cartoon! It may have been buget reasons why they had not done this, They must have thought Mattel had done what it wanted to do with He-Man line and they have clear run, Regardless when Golden Girl hit the stores they sort of been meet with

This was a line after all aimed at girls and Galoob hoped parents would see this as good thing while the Boys had MOTU, the girls would Golden Girl Guardians of the Gemstone!
But there was the first issue, Price$$$$ Golden Girl came out and was a bit more than the standard MOTU bubble card. Gallob thought lets bring them out boxed!

It was a classic case of missing the point with MOTU line, The girls did not see the combs and extra weapons and shields inside, another lost market point again maybe due to Gallob being not so rich as Mattel no mini comic of the girls Adventures!
Aside from that I did buy them at the time because they seemed most exciting, But going by West Australian prices for motu in 1984, MOTU $4.95 a figure Golden Girl came out $12.00!

Ok first figure Golden Girl herself!

The golden bakini clad warrioress was an electric shock to myself in 1984, as she was well advanced over Evil-Lyn and Teela she had a but yes her legs and arms could bend, she had better weapons and whats more a cape! And she had hair!!!! Yes Hair!
Moving on Her Arch Foe Dragon Queen who in her relentlist Quest for Evil would own all the gemstones and Control Aragonia!

The Dragon helmet, the Samurai sword with dragon hed hild and dragon armour and her shocking pink hair, what evil villiness could not have shocking pink hair in the 1980S. But what was more her BlackCatsuit!!! Talk about being so far ahead even today I look on her in deep wonder!

Odd as it may seem she was to be the more hardy of the figures! as time moved on!
But the she was to have friends as well.
In sort of funny reverse to Mattel there was to be token male warriors Ogra was to be to Dragon Queen what Evil-Lyn was to Skeletor, Ogra looked a tad like Skeletor with his Skull armour, but he was alive

Take off the helmet and you seen Ogra with his dark looks.

I found it odd besides the Blue Skin in later years you place Keldor next to I felt uneasy, I think Mattel see a whole in its story line and used poor Orgra to fill the gap!

Golden Girl was to have her token male side kick as well, Prince Kroma, Both male figures would be the poor side kicks after the line began they sold fashions not once did they get any of the after line fashion!
http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k622/blackwolfgod2009/cutsoms%20for%20Blackwolfgod2009/goldengirl005.jpg[/img]]
Prince Kroma looked like a Beach Boy who lost his way with the girls and was trapped, while he did look like a bad copy of He-Man body wise the flowing long hair sort of did not help he was a fugitive on the run from He-Man. It will be of interest to note that the Mattel was not going to let Galoob get away with selling girls after sale figure fashion lines as Mattel did just the same thing after Galoob!
But there was much more for once Golden Girl line made darn sure there girls would be well armed. Dragon Queens
cohort Wild One the first figure I ever seen with tattoed legs!

The Battle axe and psychedelic shiled and Horned helmet set her well apart from any other figure I seen before. I say McFarlane coppied more than lead as she was the first to step well outside the mould! How many bad guys on MOTU line had tats? Answer 0 None, not a one!
