Title: AFB TALKBACK: Marvel Universe: added Wave 13 p. 7
Post by: Scotty on February 27, 2009, 07:23:36 am
My first two waves of Marvel Universe have arrived (thanks MikeS!), and all I can say is, these are going to be very addictive!

Anyone else buying / bought these? What do you think?

I ordered from the amazing MikeS, who can be found right here on this site!

And they arrived in a flash too - in fact they lapped an earlier parcel I'm still waiting for!  :)

MikeS' sending me a Silver Surfer. I only wanted this to go with my BAF Galactus for the scale diff. I doubt I'll be getting anymore, unless the fuckers turn up at the local Woollies or something.

unless the fuckers turn up at the local Woollies or something.

This made me laugh because years ago when I was collecting the Batman: Animated series line I was one of the few people who picked up the Mad Hatter because I found him in the dodgy toy part of a Woolworths supermarket (despite the same Mall having Toys 'Rnt Us, K-Mart and Myer).

I would half expect to see these in Oz somewhere, seeing as alot of the smaller Hasbro stuff does show up here, but I'd never be patient enough to wait for them.  ;D

Oooh, too long! Need more now!  :)

Also, were there figures beyond S3 shown at NYCC or Toyfair? My brain says yes but I can't recall for sure.

Woohoo!! "Winter Soldier" baby!!!

I only voted for WS and Mary-Jane (of the 5). Sorry Andy, Been reading Spidey for 27 years and MJ was just the perfect supporting character (Joe Quesada also ranks in my list of people to be locked in a concrete room with......KILL! MAIM! DESTROY!)

Anyhoo, I did for a joke vote for the paperbag Spider-Man. I would have laughed if he got up!

I am officially addicted to this line.

I picked up the Black Panther today because I had not seen him anywhere else... In the city I've found them at: Myer (first), then Big W. I found the Origins Wolverine figures at Target (first), Myer, David Jones and Toy World.

I have: Spidey, Cap, Iron Man, Green Hulk, Goblin, Silver Surfer, Black Panther,
Brown costume Wolvie, Gambit (comic version), Deadpool (comic version)

Thats 10 figures .... Its the start of a collection.

who is in Wave 3?

Yikes!!! I've built up expectations now!

No, it was a combo of 1 & 2. But it clearly looked like they had just opened and put out a single box of 12 figures. Which means they are shipping to Australian retailers as a mix.

I meant to rank you lower but the fleas were obscuring my vision  ;)

Regarding Series 3 onwards....is anyone getting worried that Hasbro is going to be giving us waves where half the figures are crap? I mean series 3 & 4 and we're already getting repeats of Spidey, Iron Man and the Punisher.

Between this series and the Xmen Origins Wolverine, there are a lot of repeated characters... there are plans to continue the Wolvie series and a Cyclops is allegedly on its way with a few others .... time will tell.

Aside from the Silver Surfer that I only bought to display with my BAF Galactus and which I am currently heavily modifying, I haven't seen one figure from this line that I want.

They're charging two thirds the money of a 6" figure, and you're getting less than a quarter of the quality. No thanks.

I hear you Max. I'm just trying to be philosophical about it. If this is where Marvel figures are happening at the moment then this is where I have to get my fix. I definitely hear people who were diehard Legends fan not wanting to start over with this line, for sure.

Yes i have started too in fact just got a couple for my birthday Iron man and brown suit Wolverine  which brings my marvel universe to five dead pool. miss marvel ronin and moon knight. and now i am wanting to track down a captain america and a red hulk. and hulk.

Title: Re: AFB TALKBACK: Marvel Universe: My Universe

they look the way they look for they are a smaller size so some characters are going to look like they take tips  from a crazy retired cosmetic sales person. espically with big guys like hulk and red hulk. and the ladies are going to look a little leaning towards needing make overs. for smaller size means details are going to be hard to get perfect. on the figures

I had no problems with the bad sculpts and paint, etc, it was the constant reissue of IronSpiderVerine that annoyed me.
But then I found DCUC so life is good

Title: Re: AFB TALKBACK: Marvel Universe: My Universe

iron man spider man and Wolverine are the big guns. toy companies believe in order for the waves to sell they have to have the big guns in for  the parents will come looking for them for their kids and then the kids once they see the other characters may want them. though the same thing can be said about the Hulk. and DC direct uses the same reasoning with super man bat man and wonder woman. the big guns in waves to attract the buyers. besides the iron spiderwolverines are just a minor inconvenice to get to the other characters since one has to go through them to find the other ones. which proably means wolverine will get stuck in the wave the will include dark phoenix and phoenix down the road. for she would just be interesting done in the mu line.

Title: Re: AFB TALKBACK: Marvel Universe: My Universe
Post by: fishmilkshake on February 10, 2010, 02:48:33 am
Agreed Demoncat, but that logic for Hasbro is the reason they won't get my money. Each slot taken up in a wave by an IronSpiderVine means that I don't get Firelord, Terrax, or Drax. If they are going to tricklefeed the characters I 'actually' want then I'll just make my own 6" scale Legends instead.

True dat!Mattel seems to have figured out you don't need WonderSuperBat to anchor every wave. Will others ever figure it out?

Well, to be fair, Mattel had gotten around that in DCUC by including the World's Greatest Superheroes figures, so that what retailers get includes the big names they want...

I don't mind getting a different Wolverine, Iron Man, or Spidey each time around, since it does admittedly fill a "hole" in a collection. However, it's interesting that in the last 12 months all three of those characters have had their own true-to-comics toylines in the same scale (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Iron Man 2, Spider-man), and yet they still come out with more variants in the Marvel U line.

I think the smarter thing to do would be what they seem to be doing where they re-issue a figure in cases of a new wave so that retailers still get enough of these three, without actually reducing the number of new figures they produce. After all, most kids want Iron Man in his current armor, Spidey in Red and Blue, and Wolvie in a current costume (like say the Astonishing X-Men costume that they still haven't made readily accessible - I have the Wolvie/Colossus two pack that did the removable mask, so where's the X-Chariot, masked repaint one now?).

The one that gets me most though is when they announce variants after the line has started shipping. So now if I wanted classic warpath, or phasing vision, I need to go trawling eBay for a figure I (essentially) already have. Douches.

Yep.

But I'm even more stingy in that I don't need multiples of a character. Give me one good Wolverine or Spidey figure and I'm happy. I don't need 6 arm spidey, battle torn costume Spidey, Black costume, etc

I can't believe we get Hulk. I realise he sells (or does he? There's still Hulk movie stuff around). I really would have preferred 'The Constrictor' or 'The Hood' (the latter of whom I thought was a shoe in). Fine, I'll make my own.....fuckers!

I was expecting Hulk with Val. It does make some sense Defenders-wise and I can see them being nervous about her selling without a big name.

Mary Jane Watson with Ms. Lion?

Good lord!  :D

IMO looks like a good line-up for 2010.  These suckers sell for me, unlike DCIH....

Hulk (Grey, Green, and Red) sell really well, so I understand him being re-released.

Interesting to read about the variants - I wonder how rare they'll actually be.

At this point they seem rare, give it 6 months though.  Bullseye was meant to be rare and have a variant (Light, Dark and i even have one with no playing cards, open hand)  but he is seemingly pretty common as i have seen him a Kmart and Grace bros (Toys r us, yous has a lots to live ups to).

I will eventually get photo's up, sorry, i know i promised.

This. I've had almost no problem seeing MU in stores, eventually. Like for awhile I couldn't find a guardian anywhere but now him and Union Jack pegwarm. For all the problems MU may have with paint and sculpts, Hasbro does keep stock on the shelves.

No! :) Firestorm. And $30 is way too much! Just got him yesterday, and I never realised how crap these actually are. It was just a sneaking suspicion I had. The articulation is pretty good, but the sculpt is fugly. AND, they've based this off the DCUC Ronnie, which you may recall is essentially a repaint variant of the Jason Firestorm, so there are all the unique Jason costume sculpt intricacies underneath the paint job! Geez...

According to Wikipedia:
This special line consists of super-sized figures alongside a regular 3 3/4" figure and is set for release in the fall. Hasbro has yet to further figures in this size but has said if Galactus is successful at retail, they have more ideas for the line.
[edit]Wave 1 - October 2010
This wave, consisting of one two-pack with a suggested retail of $49.99, has yet to be released. Originally thought to be packaged with a comic book like the Gigantic Battles line the state of the comic pack-in is not known at this time. The packaging, with artwork by Mike Deodato, is designed to lie on its side due to the large nature of the product. It will include a flip-open top so consumers can see the figure inside. Hasbro brand manager Scott George will provide the voice of Galactus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Universe_(toyline)#Wave_1_-_October_2009 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Universe_(toyline)#Wave_1_-_October_2009)

The Astonishing X-Men Wolvie with X-Chariot that was announced for the Wolverine Origins line still hasn't been sighted either, and that one I'm now expecting is dead in the water, or getting shifted to another line.

It's a great set to be sure, though I had Constrictor as my number two, followed by YJ and Spider-woman. I'm assuming the Antman you desire is a full 3 3/4 sized one not the mini one that came with YJ? There's another mini one riding an ant meant to be in the classic Avengers set later this year.

Given no-one seems to be selling the ant man individually on eBay yet, you probably should have considered keeping the cat confined all day, and checking leavings. Or pay for another YJ.  :'(

I really don't bother much with retail here in Melbourne. Nothing much appears outside of Toys R Us.

I have been soooo tempted to buy stuff just to clear it out, but that's one slippery slope I've yet to take, and I have so few uncharted slippery slopes left I need to hold on to them.  ;)
