I'll go first,i need ideas for a stretchable Cape.Basically this cape is affixed to the Body from shoulders to knees and out to the Wrists. It stretches out as the arms are raised for flight purposes. It's black so at least that part's easy and i unfortunately don't have any sort of decent piccie reference.
So whaddayathink?

Well did you could use craft foam like my Batros. I used fabric for my Black Condor way back cause he had the same issue.

I think the craft foam idea is a good one.
The other thing that would be a possibility is to use nylon(tent material). You'd need to hem the edges to prevent fraying and  could use rit dye to get the correct color.  Just a thought, I haven't tried it yet, but it is something I've been thinking about trying.

Nylon sounds like a good idea, it will have a more natural flow to it, etc.

Is there some way you could get a glue on fabric that retains the flexibility?

Great thread idea, FB.

I have a question re paint apps:

I want to try doing a "white" Silver Surfer, as we was always drawn white back in the Buscema days, and was referred to as white in practically the whole run (white-faced freak, etc). Obviously, a simple white paint job isn't going to do the job. I was thinking about a translucent white spray over a silver base, but then I realised what I wanted: The pearly white finish that the DCD New Gods Lightray has.

Any ideas how to achieve that?

There's a metallic pearl white paint put out by Folk Art. I could probably send you a bottle.

I have also seen customizer's use large latex party balloons.

Okay guys. I need a base idea. I bought the parts to make the entire cast from the show Firefly from MikeS. Except for Jayne. Now I'm using Dr. Who figures and don't really know how well they compare to other lines being I don't own any. I do know they're 5 inch figures. Now Jayne was pretty big. So do you think a 6" figure would work and if so who? I have his head already; so I'm just looking for an appropriate body.

Pics of him can be seen here. Thanks.  :)

Ohhh activity, questions and answers.I like it!

Good ideas on the Cape guys, i really want it to contract rather than fold up when you lower the arms.I'm being really fussy on something that i have next to no reference for i know.I was thinking maybe Lycra but i hate how daggy the edges get when you use material on figs.Don't know myself the way to tidy up those edges without stitching which would ruin the whole effect.

Dozy,Jack has the right idea. Those metallic pearl paints really do achieve the kind of finish i think you are after. Also have a look at the R/C Hobby Paints,i'm sure there's something similar there. And then you can spray it on too if you like.

Jack,i had 2 figs jump straight to mind. One would be the Stargate Jack O Neill figure in the t-shirt.Wears the same style of military pants as Jayne has which would save an effort. He was series 3 i think in the desert camouflage colours.
My second thought was the Balthazar figure from charmed series 1 figures.Bigger than 5" but not a huge 6" and his Jacket and pants could be easily made to work for Jayne.I think i have one of them floating around too if you want it.
And may i say as a HUGELY MASSIVE,NAY MILDLY OBSESSED Firefly fan i'm very excited to see you tackle these. Can't wait!

Is that this one? http://www.plaidonline.com/productDetail.asp?itemID=1663

It doesn't look like it's easy to find here, so you sending it sounds like a great idea!

That's where I got the idea of spraying a translucent white over silver, though I'm not sure it will be as good at the metallic pearl finish. There's an R/C shop just over in Leichhardt that I might check out to see if they can show me some examples or give me some ideas.

He is,i didn't notice that till you pointed it out.Unless he means an Online Art supplier.

Actually Dozy a really, really good Art Supplier in Sydney is Eckersleys. They have a couple of Stores from memory, one in Sydney itself and one in Parramatta.

Yes, there's an online seller in WA, but their postage is shit ($12.95!), so I might check that Eckerleys place out.

Some ideas. I'm basically waiting for my Dr. Who figures to arrive so I can compare scales with other figures I own. Don't want to order something I can't use. Should I post wip pics of them? I think I may make all 12 of them at once.

Ah ok,let us know when you get them, that will definitely help with sorting out a base.I thought you might have received them by now.
I'm really excited to see how your Firefly figs pan out.

Next question from me:

Star Brand (preferably John Romita Jr-style). I'm thinking Marvel Select Ghost Rider base, but not sure what to use for the head. Have been looking at some Street Fighter figures, like Ken or Remy, but nothing that nails it.

Thoughts?

I really need some help on a piccie or 2 with this one as i can't really picture what you need Dozy.Got any at all?

I'm with you all the way there.I didn't know they were even released until i walked into a Shop one day and saw them on the wall.I immediately got excited about Serenity figs until i got up close, then it was BLECH!!!What a disappointment.

Actually there's an English girl who Customises Buffy stuff and also has done some amazing Serenity figs as well.I'll see if i can track her Site down again.

This is probably the most iconic of the lot, but the hair is more like in the logo box.

Byrne did this to him, but the head is still right.

No thoughts, but really looking forward to seeing the figure. I loved the New Universe when it first came out.

You know that first pic of him flying through space made me think of a Hasbro legends figure who's got his long hair blowing around.Damned if i can think of his name though.
Will have to think on this one a bit more.

Adam Warlock?

Good idea but prolly too small for the MS Ghost Rider body.

You're lucky you only got that far. I bought a couple Jaynes to make the Challengers of the Unknown and if you move his arms they snap off. All four of them did it. Real pieces of shit I must say.

Yeah Jack, she tends to turn all her figs into Statues but she does some very nice and detailed sculpt work that's for sure.

That sucks on those Jaynes, glad i couldn't get over the ugliness of those figs to buy any.Dodged a bullet there obviously.

Are you sure that Adam Warlock wouldn't work for Dozy's custom Andy?It just seems absolutely perfect as a likeness?Anyone got both the MS Ghost Rider and the Warlock fig so we could get a comparison?

Hey all, since the death of the 6" Marvel Legends is upon us, I've decided it's time to start making my own.

Can anyone tell who a good base figure would be to make larger framed male figs? I'm talking characters who are 6'6" or more.
The main figure that comes to mind for that is ML5 Sabretooth but he's impossible to find and expensive. Just as an aside, I noticed he's just a repaint of the 2004 Spider-Man "Venom" figure.

Other series suggestions are welcome.

You'll have to excuse my lack of name knowledge in the Marvel Universe character names apart from the obvious major characters.Saying that Toybiz made a large dude,he was blue and red with a pasty sort of complexion[i think his skin was blue]which might be up your alley.Sorry i can't be more specific.Good luck with you plans though,be glad to help wherever i can.

Never played with those figs myself Dozy,i've seen them used on ML bases many times though so they might be good old boil and pop. Can't be certain though.

It would work from a sculpt perspective, however Marvel Select figures are in a larger scale than Legends (a pet peeve of mine....) so the head may look to tiny on the larger scale body.

I own Ghost Rider and have Warlock coming via eBay soon, so can post some pics when it arrives to compare.

Title: Re: Custom"Think Tank"

Sounds good,be keen to see that.Sometimes you can get away with heads in the variances of 6 inch scales body-wise.
Saying that though another similar style Head is the Movie Flash Gordon figure. He's a larger scale like the Ross Justice figs.

Mr Sinister! Yeah cool!

I'm starting to make a list of characters that can easily be modded. Iron Fist and Bullseye are also fairly generic and with Mr Sinister in the mix it would cover small, medium and large body types! Sweet! Thanks FB!

Actually not yet. I'm also big into Warhammer 40k so I have all the painting gear and the enthusiasm. Just in the planning stages  ;D

I'm actually struggling for base figures. I have a spare Hercules and Banshee but I'm off to Toys 'Rnt Us tomorrow to check out wrestling figures (never thought I'd say that).

True!

I did the rounds of Westfield in Canberra today and things are more dire than ever. I actually wonder if the end of the financial year being a quarter away means people don't get much new stock? What am I saying? Toy retailing is dead!

Title: Re: Custom"Think Tank"
Post by: Scotty on March 23, 2009, 04:19:54 am
Yeah, the joy of the toy run died for me a long time ago. That's why I suffered apoplexy when I found those B&B figures at Kmart awhile ago. Once upon a time I would enter Westfield Belco or the Canberra Centre without stopping at all the haunts, but now I don't bother to go out of my way, because I know the result.

When I think of all the generic lines of figures that aren't being stocked it's very depressing. Even just the DC and Marvel lines!!!!!
ARRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!  >:(

Title: Re: Custom"Think Tank"
Post by: Scotty on March 23, 2009, 04:42:46 am
I've banged on about this before, but I blame the movie crap. If I was a buyer at TRU or Kmart and I still had Batman Begins and Superman Returns stuff on my shelves and I didn't know anything about the stuff, I'd stop stocking DC toys too. The Iron Man toys sold pretty well but there's still Hulk stuff everywhere too. Pfaugh.

Oh cool! I'm not very familiar with them but from memory a lot of them aren't very "cut". The JAKKS stuff is very average.

Typical - after months of working out a base figure for my Starbrand custom, I go ahead and find a reasonable deal on a Marvel Select Ghost Rider, only to see the BSG Apollo in the LCS during the week. Apollo doesn't have the boots that GR has, but it's something to keep in mind I guess  :-\

Title: Re: Custom"Think Tank"

The Adam Warlock head would probably be more in scale with Apollo. Once my Adam arrives (hopefully this week) I will have all three of those figs and can do a comparison for you.

I was thinking about this,if the Warlock Head doesn't work out i have another possible option.
I have a Movie Flash Gordon Head here that would probably work out too.Be using it for a Custom soon but if it's the choice i could probably make a Cast of it before i commit it to it's new character.

Yeah that's a good question. It's an option, anyway.

I think the face I'm looking for is a bit longer than the Warlock head has, but I'd still be keen to see it next to both GR and Apollo.

Heh.

I wasn't planning on using Apollo's head. I was more interested in his biker-style jacket (the blue one). But to answer your question: I'm OK with hair sculpting. I sculpted the hair on Badger, and that was my first shot. I'm still looking at some Street Fighter figures. The Vera extra head looks pretty good. I'd mostly just have to cut away some hair.

I've got the GR on its way (all the way from Portugal), so I'll stare at that for a while and think about it. I don't need it for anything else, so I'd like to give it a go before I look at the Apollo option.

Well, what about a head from a similarly scaled figure, like from Marvel Select? There's some flamey stuff around his neck to sort out though too. I agree it's the best suit if you can find the right noggin.

Unless you count the skrulls and brood, I don't own one. Oh wait, I have the Thanos figure as I just assumed we'd never see him in M.Legends. I did like the look of the She-Hulk one but the articulation looks average.

No, but I'm very small, frail and sensitive and don't wish to put it out there less my peers all laugh and point and say hurtful things like "Are you kidding me, that's just stupid".

Actually, theatrics aside, my idea was 'The Wrecker'. GR has that same looser fitting costume with the fold over bit across his torso. As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm having trouble with a base figure for the bigger characters. Only one that seems to fit is the AOA Sabretooth.

Not so much the articulation as the 'spirit' of ML. I'd prefer not to use figures that blatantly don't fit like some of the DCD ones. Now I've forgotten what Apollo looked like, was he posted at the beginning of the topic?

I know it's a difficult proposition considering our lack of access here but a lot of ML Customisers are using DCUC bodies as their bases now.Been turning out good too.

Yeah, I reckon so. I might have to dash over to Tyroc's place and play with all his DC toys.
And yes, I did go back 2 pages and look at Apollo. I wish he was more muscular. Ghost Rider looks like he's about the same size as "Hercules" from the Annihilus series.

I spied a 'Bobby Lashley' figure from another wrestling series and he's huge. But I think he may just be too big  :(
It's like there needs to be one in-between. I might pick-up the fig anyway for something I'm gonna do and I'll post a pic for reference.

Eh, I think I'm going to get rid of the Green Arrow and Impulse Smallville figures. Seems like too many ifs and buts to work with them. The Aquaman I might keep though, as there is less work involved in getting the buck down to a smooth base, and the head sculpt is the best of the bunch. The shoes might be a bit of a pain though.

Yeah there were a couple of Minotaurs in that line but they were a little too 'fantasy'.

They do look awesome Dozy and FS especially that Blue one out front is very similar head-wise.
2 things though, one, those would be expensive to get i reckon just for a head. And 2,these are probably just a bit small scale-wise.
Fantastic idea though,thanks Mate.

I'd offer to sculpt it for you out of 'green stuff' but I've never sculpted anyting that big so it would probably just end up looking more like a bemused panda.

http://www.shopatron.com/products/productdetail/Texas+Longhorn+Bull/part_number=13275/524.0.1.1.21580.0.0.0.0?

Looks better in the flesh, but I might have concerns about getting the neck to do it's thing if it was my project. Plenty of carving required I think, though barring the 4H option, you'd probably have to do that regardless. Cost was $12.

Got the McGuinness Hawkman today and he's friggin huge!!He'll work really well although a new problem has popped up for me with this figure.I can resculpt the Forearms and everything else but i now need a Face that's in-scale with this large Body. The rest of the Head is no worries as he wears a headdress so i can sculpt that.
One problem heads straight into another with this guy. :-\

Which one is that? Is that the enamel spray that DangerDrVenture uses?

If so I looked around all the autopart places such as Supercheap, Autoban, etc, and finally found it at "Repco". It's pricey and I gave it a whirl on a test figure and it worked just fine without undercoat. However, I didn't think it was any better than the Tamiya stuff and the former is enamel so make sure you get it right first time  :D

When I get going, I want things to be right.  What type of hair like material would you guys use to make a large male action figure seem downright Shaggy?

Some will know what I am trying to do, others know how I like to keep people guessing.

Anyone know of a good head for Hector Hammond, I was thinking of a MS Uatu the Watcher figure....

Title: Re: How to - Custom "Think Tank"
Post by: fishmilkshake on February 26, 2011, 03:30:36 pm
Hmmm.....it's tough one. I think the only way for a man to appear shaggy is to use longer strands of hair that you can force into one direction so it looks like it's hanging off him. If it sticks up and/or out it'll look odd. I'd honestly go to one of those haberdashery places and ask them.

In regards to Hammond, the Watcher is a bit hard to get hold of so it might not be cost effective. What about a MODOK from Marvel Legends?

See, I always thought his skin was blue. Maybe it's blued chrome?

From memory his skin was covered (via an experiment) in something called "Omnidium" or somesuch.

Been a While since I have customized, inventory is over and I need a projest.  So, I am getting ready to get started again in the 6 inch DC scale...
Copperhead or Lord Naga body with a CSA Johnny Quick head...which do you think that would be a better start for a Sir Justin? I already have two Copperheads in the fodder box if that makes a difference.

If I can get in the swing, there is an Alien I wanna try out for the other world comp.

Okay Marvel fans....who remembers Warhawk?

So is his skin silver or light blue? I'm too lazy to dig out my back issues

What I would do is paint the visible skin parts metallic white, and swirl in a little metallic light blue while it's wet. Not too much, just enough to get an effect.

Go for it Aq!

I dunno about Sir Justin. There's certainly plenty of opinions. I'd use one of those Copperheads and see how you feel about the finished effort.

Hmmm.....good idea. Never would have thought of that.  [thumbs up]

Ok heres what I want to do. I have a Captain Glenn figure and I want her to have flesh arms and legs. Now I could try painting these but I could perhaps take the arms and legs off a she-ra fig but does the flat bit in the shoulder joint come out if you heat the right place? and can you remove the joint bit that looks like it's inside the leg or does that stay there? Oh and I want her to have thigh boots so any ideas on that  [dunno]

If the arms are already what you want then I'd just paint them.

As for the boots, you could sculpt them? I've sculpted boot tops a few times and so long as you're willing to sand the putty once it's dry it'll work well.

yeah the new boot tops aren't the problem I'm more concerned about getting rid of the old ones being a joint and all

I'd shave and sand off the existing boot tops, then sculpt the new ones above the knee joints.

Ok disaster time I may have ruined my competition entry. I spray painted the removable costume pieces from a captain Glenn figure. The helmet shoulder armour worked great however the wrap around body piece has done that sticky never drying thing that happens sometimes with the wrong paint plastic combination. Does anybody have a fix or have I ruined a hard to replace piece?

Oh and what's the due date on the comp?

Sounds like the piece may be made of rubber or something similar rather than just plastic. You can try putting it in the sun (depending on where you are?) for a while to see if it can dry it out?

I think the comp is due on the 15th July?  ???

Out of curiosity what sort of Spray Paint did you use?

I have found when this does happen the only way out is to strip it off and start again unforunately.

Has anyone tried using Gundam model kits for customs? If so, what would be a good scale to use for 1/18 figures?

No idea?

It's always weird with those things as they say 1/62 scale....presuming I know how big a Gundam would be in "real life"

Yeah, the Gundam that lives in my neighborhood is a bit of a shut in, so it's hard to get a good look at him.

What's the best buck to make a custom Sif? ML and DCUC need not apply.

Without a ML or DCUC base, I would look at a female wrestling fig, how about Ann O'Brien from LCBH?

Hmm... interesting buck.

I'll need to check out the wrestling ones. Last time I looked there was all the kneepads and shit, though that might be OK for an Olivier Coipel version, rather than a Walter Simonson version. I was also thinking a DCD Diana Prince buck might be a good start for the Coipel version.

Kneepads and elbow pads are rubber pieces that are easily removed. The boots would have to be dremeled down.

Cool. I can handle some cutting/dremelling.The main thing I am after is a female buck that isn't waif-like. Remember DCUC's Big Barda? That's the opposite of how a powerful female character should look.

If the goatee is subtle I'd consider just painting it on. At the 6" scale no one would notice.

Does anyone have experience using plastimorph (instamorph)?  Good or bad experience? Ideas for using it?  I picked some up on a whim and would to use itwith my customizing. I was going to try heating some up, rolling it out into a sheet and then cutting a flat shape out of it. Like a head dress for snowbird from alpha flight.

Same here, it's still sitting on my workbench. That workbench is on the opposite side of the house from the stove. Too far.
