Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 08, 2011, 12:29:17 am Hey guys! Been forever since I've updated. Bummer that my links are dead, but that's a long story. I have backup links for most of it, but it would probably be best for me to start a new thread.
Oh, I have some new stuff. Still super-busy working on my backlog of custom commissions(no, I haven't forgotten anyone!). While taking a break, I decided to dig out some old DC Direct parts and make these two guys. After realizing that Mattel and DCD probably won't touch these 'expiring' designs, I wanted them on my DCD Batman shelf. It's nice to work on a figure that doesn't have all that Mattel articulation to bust apart, although pulling DCD arms from their sockets to paint the shoulders is a kind of enhanced torture. These have to be my first DC Direct customs in about 5 years! Dick Grayson Batman: Base figure is a Brian Bolland style "Killing Joke" Batman. Since Mike Locasio sculpts so many of the new figures for DCD, including some of the Batman INC figures, I decided to use this Batman as the base. It has alot of Mike's signature sculpting style and it seemed logical to me to use this base as a hypothetical 'what it may look like' if DC Direct had Mike also sculpt a Dick Grayson Batman to go with Damian. I chose the Ray Vilafane sculpted "JLI" Batman head because the overall shape reminds me a lot of the Frank Quitely and Cameron Stewart depictions of his cowl in Batman and Robin. I smoothed the forehead and softened the chin to make him look a bit less cranky. I split the upper and lower torso to remove the old 80's Batman belt, then glued it back together and sculpted the abdomen to be smooth top to bottom. The belt was sculpted after the aves hardened, so I could cut it really close and evenly. The gloves are from some Battlestar Galactica toy, and the gauntlets are also sculpted. Paint is really thin layers of Testors Acrylic, with a hand-painted symbol on his chest. (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/dickbatman4.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/dickbatman2.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/dickbatman3.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/dickbatman1.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/batmaninc4.jpg) Tim Drake Red Robin: I'm not totally happy with the head choice, bearing in mind that I used a shaved down DC Universe Hal Jordan. I plan to replace the head if I can get ahold of a Marvel Universe Guardian some time soon. It isn't terrible, but I'm not 100% happy with it. It is a smoothed over "Batman and Son" Tim Drake Robin with cuts from other Batman figures to make his beltwork. The cape is from a DCUC Dr Mid-Nite, and the forearms are modified DCUC Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle. The toy was painted with thin and watery layers of Testors Acrylic. The symbol on the disc is hand-painted. Always a pleasure checking out your work and this time is no different. I like that you're mixing up your painting styles and you've shown that your brush work is as good as your spraying. Looks like Testors is the paint of choice. Good stuff! Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: dozymuppet on August 08, 2011, 06:01:17 am That Dick Grayson Batman is very very nice.
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 08, 2011, 07:30:19 am Hello stranger!
Your paint work is exquisite as always. Great to see your work again. [thumbs up] Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: fp_spirit on August 08, 2011, 08:31:10 am Love the Bat-family you just put together. That Grayson Batman is superb. Red Robin is also extremely well done. Fits in well.
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: The_Donster on August 08, 2011, 12:29:16 pm Man, that looks great, thanks for sharing [bravo]
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 08, 2011, 02:48:06 pm Thanks guys =)
Although the more I look at these pics, the more Red Robin's head becomes a bummer to me. I really need to replace it. I'm trying to think of a batman figure with a less mature head... Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 08, 2011, 06:18:12 pm I see that. I think it's the mouth - a bit too scowly, so without the ears it makes him look a bit old, perhaps?
Is there such a thing as a non-scowly Bat-head? ??? Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 08, 2011, 07:01:17 pm Yah, which is funny because that's a Hal Jordan head on Red Robin...
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Stars on August 08, 2011, 07:09:31 pm I think they look great!
I see what you mean about the Red Robin head though. Maybe Superboy, Beast Boy or Batman Beyond unmasked might work. Stars Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: FB on August 09, 2011, 06:04:48 am Good to see you back here again DDV.Bats looks superb, you hand painted the Symbol? You maniac, that's some precision right there.Red Robin is aces too but the Head does kinda let him down i agree with you.How about a KC RR Head? It's actually quite a small Figure so maybe the scale will fit, just an idea.Other than that i love him.
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 09, 2011, 02:20:27 pm It only takes a small brush and control =)
I'm trying to find one of these Guardian heads http://www.google.com/imgres?q=marvel+legends+guardian&hl=en&safe=off&gbv=2&tbm=isch&tbnid=3nma80-N6DziOM:&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/photos/shadowowl/4024697068/&docid=SobeAEdS9K4meM&w=500&h=375&ei=YYhBTtjQKOmKsQK_sbGxCQ&zoom=1&biw=1366&bih=575 Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 09, 2011, 04:42:38 pm Good idea! Also - non-scowly. ;)
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: dozymuppet on August 10, 2011, 05:05:21 am Just got to be careful with the ML scale - don't want a pin head!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 10, 2011, 10:04:08 pm I used a small base for Red Robin, so a pin head might be the right thing...
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: dozymuppet on August 10, 2011, 10:31:00 pm In that case, an ML Iron Fist might work as well.
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 13, 2011, 12:53:19 am So guys, I'm about to take some updated pictures of Dick Grayson and Red Robin. Anyone wanna seeee?
They mostly involve new capes and a few tweaks. I didn't like the DCU cape on Grayson, or Tim's weird sad face. Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: fishmilkshake on August 13, 2011, 01:14:26 am ......or Tim's weird sad face. :D Maybe the endless war on crime has taken its toll? Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: FB on August 13, 2011, 02:45:25 am So guys, I'm about to take some updated pictures of Dick Grayson and Red Robin. Anyone wanna seeee? They mostly involve new capes and a few tweaks. I didn't like the DCU cape on Grayson, or Tim's weird sad face. Bring it on! [popcorn] Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 13, 2011, 07:00:20 pm Here are the updated pics, and a WIP...I'm making my own Batman Reborn/Inc wave 2.
Dick with new head, cape, boots, and trunks. I felt the old trunks were way too high up and looked more like a bikini or something. For his head, I took the new Batman INC Bruce head and sanded the jawline to be narrower and slightly younger, and I also removed most of the stress lines in the forehead. He shouldn't look quite as angry and rugged as Bruce, but he should still look like Batman... (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/batmandick1.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/batmandick2.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/batmandick3.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/batmandick4.jpg) With Tim, I made him a new head by resculpting a DC Direct Superboy-Prime. I also repainted the figure and put the capsules in the correct spots on his cross-belts. (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/timered1.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/timered2.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/timered3.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/timered4.jpg) Professor Pyg! Sculpted his mask over a DC Direct Perry White from Superman. Body has a lot of work left to do. (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/pygwip1.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/pygwip2.jpg) Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 13, 2011, 07:53:37 pm Wonderful improvements DDV. And that Pyg looks amazing!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Dr Terrific on August 13, 2011, 08:09:11 pm I love Dick Grayson and Pyg!!
The DC Direct Black Mask had a great power drill, you know... Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: fishmilkshake on August 14, 2011, 12:34:15 am Hah! Pyg is fantastic!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: FB on August 14, 2011, 06:22:18 am Robin looks much more youthful as he should, nice work.I'm liking that reworked head for Dick as well as the Trunks.Pyg truned out great too, never seen him attempted before.Great work all around DDV!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 14, 2011, 07:10:45 pm Red Robin has been a more much dramatic turn for Tim, so I think the flat mouth fits him better than a smile.
Pyg still has a ways to go, too. Lots of work on that apron, for one. I'm about to start on it. Hoping to make Dr. Hurt to go with him next, but I don't have any decent DC Direct tuxedo/suit bodies. Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 14, 2011, 07:17:13 pm Looking forward to the finished Pyg!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 16, 2011, 02:14:33 am Here we go! Oink.
I am planning to make Dr. Hurt and a little background object to go with Pyg. I'll be posting that in a few days to a week. PROFESSOR PYG! (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg8.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg7.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg6.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg5.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg4.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg3.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg2.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/profpyg1.jpg) Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: fishmilkshake on August 16, 2011, 03:59:22 am Absolutely love it!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: FB on August 16, 2011, 05:39:04 am Now that is a high quality piece right there.Extremely slick Paints and the sculpting is absolute top notch.Loving the accessories too, well done!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: dozymuppet on August 16, 2011, 06:09:32 am Impressive and nasty.
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 16, 2011, 06:33:30 am My. God. That is just awesome mate. [thumbs up]
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Dr Terrific on August 16, 2011, 06:51:02 pm I love it, DDV.
You need those Dolls... Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 17, 2011, 01:22:12 am Your sins have found you out...
A preview of Hurt. Pretty much shows the whole figure, but it needs some touchups on the teeth and edges of the mask. I'm building their backdrop item right now, then I'll have full pictures. Thanks for the comments, guys! (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k184/DrVentureJr/hurtpreview.jpg) Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 17, 2011, 03:11:58 am Pretty spectacular. Did you sculpt that head?
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 17, 2011, 03:49:55 am I sculpted the mask and hair onto a 1st appearance Riddler
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 17, 2011, 07:22:48 am Fantastic job!
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Dr Terrific on August 17, 2011, 09:27:40 am I particularly like the use of different finishes with the blacks.
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 17, 2011, 03:50:36 pm Oh, wait until I finish the big prop item that goes with them =)
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 17, 2011, 07:13:17 pm This could easily be the next wave of Batman Inc - except that the character selection is too original and creative for DCD. :P
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: DangerDrVenture on August 18, 2011, 02:19:41 am So my 'fan wave' of Batman INC/Reborn series 2 is complete. It consists of Dick Grayson Batman, Red Robin, Dr. Hurt, and Professor Pyg.
It also includes this accessory/character, depending on how you look at it. Pyg's "Mommy in Nails". It is made from cut hobby sticks, nails from plastic toothpics, and lots of glue. The mask is sculpted. If you can be in NYC in Oct, you could show them to Frank himself. Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: fishmilkshake on August 19, 2011, 04:45:29 am Man that is some fun stuff to look at [rock]
Title: DangerDrVenture's Newer Customs Post by: Scotty on August 19, 2011, 07:06:10 am It's just amazing. I'm very happy that DDV has agreed to do a Custom Spotlight at the blog on Pyg - it's just a stunning, stunning effort.
