Title: What 80s toylines do you love?
Post by: bowspearer on November 20, 2011, 06:14:33 am
So here's the thing. I love this place, but often with so many people being modern focused and me being vintage focused, it's tricky sometimes to find some toy discussions which tend to be up my alley. So rather than finding another vintage forum but having to deal with d-bags, I figure it's high time I was accountable and actually started some vintage toy discussions on here as I know that there's plenty of vintage love here to tap into.

So with that in mind, what are peoples' favorite 80s toy lines?

OK, I'll start.

Thundercats
Silverhawks
Secret Wars
Super Powers
AD&D (LJN)
Transformers
Blackstar
Crystar
Supernaturals
Buck Rogers
Remco Monsters
Robotech (just now getting into that stuff)
Infaceables

Also, you could start this in the Toys I Grew Up With thread as it is kinda dedicated to this type of thing.

I am, of course, a sucker for Masters of the Universe, have several Thundercats and a couple of Silver Hawks, an almost complete Battle Beasts collection. And an almost complete TMNT (Hey, it started in 1988) Playmates collection.

Going into the early 90s I got a complete collection of Toxic Crusaders, a complete set of both Bandai collections of The Tick and a complete collection of WildC.A.T.S.

(everything without variants)

We had a fair selection of Transformers, Justice League, MASK and Masters of the Universe toys. I also had the full set of Voltron lions and pilots. The one line I wished for more of would be Centurions. That whole Mr Potatohead idea of plugging things into the main figure seemed awesome.

I was out of action figure collecting by the time many of these great lines emerged.

My main collections were:

Mego Star Trek (all lost to me now, sob!)
Star Wars
Super Powers

I had a few MOTU figures, but only the very early ones.

I was but a wee lad when my parents took me to the drive-in (remember those?) to see some film called 'Star Wars'.
My mother bought me the Luke in Tatooine duds figure the following week and I was in love. I can still remember when each 'new wave' came out and those card backs changed to show the new figures. By the time Jedi was out they were cranking out the figures.

Unfortunately it was towards the end of the line when I discovered my first comic shop and the treasure chest that was back issues. With allowances what they were I needed to choose, so packed away my Star Wars figures in favour of comics.

I saw Star Wars at the Drive-In too!!

I used to have the 12" GI Joes with Kung Fu Grip and several Megos including Big Jim stuff which was really 70s stuff.

But yes,Star Wars was the big start for me too when it comes to Action Figures.Even though it started in the 70s it really hit it's stride in the 80s.So many good memories and so much cool stuff.
I also had the Buck Rogers[from the TV series]Action Figures and the original Battlestar Galactica Figures as well.
They used to all combine for epic battles.I mean Stormtroopers and Cylons, what an army!Unfortunately i kept them all in a Case and as i moved from House to House when i got older i left them somewhere and never saw any of them again. :'(

Love the Super Powers Figures too although i didn't discover them until many years later.Got a minty mint SP Batmobile as well as Batman and Robin. Also a Martian Manhunter of course, real prizes of my collection.

I grew up with the smaller GI Joe stuff and Star Wars.  I never had a lot of the figures, but I had enough.  I also loved the original Masters of the Universe stuff.  Both for play as the characters, and they also made up the bulk of toy wrestling federation.  It helped that they were already dressed as wrestlers. O0

I also had a fair amount of Transformers and TMNT when that 'toon first hit.

Ouch! That hurts!

I used to keep all my Star Wars figures in the box that Castle Greyskull came in. To this day they are still there. Whenever I move house it's one of the main boxes I keep my eye on. Weird to think some of them are 34 years old now. Must dig them out and dedicate some shelf space to them.

I collect:

Star Wars - have a complete set
MOTU - had a complete set; but Christian broke a few of them. [cursing]
Thundercats - finally finished this thanks to an internet friend who gave me the Driller figure.
GI Joe - have most of them up until '91. Don't care about the ones from the 90s after that.
TMNT - have all the ones I wanted except for Scratch I think.

Those are the main ones.
Also have complete sets of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Voltron, Toxic Crusaders, Dick Tracy.
Still collecting Dune (need the Sandworm), C.O.P.s, Robotech; and Transformers (only the ones that came out in '84-85)

There're probably a few other lines I'm forgetting.

Well, I started with Star Wars figures. I still have a heap of vintage ones.

I nearly have a complete MOTU collection minus most vehicles and playsets. I also had a heap of Smurfs when they were sold at BP service stations in Oz.

That thing is awesome! Mine's well loved (as are all our SP figures), but still appreciated. Lex's Jet was equally cool, but the Sups plane made no sense.

I had a similar experience with the Hall of Justice, I had it in my hands and was walking to the cashier - unfortunately I had neglected to tell my parents about this and they caught me before I could make it to the check-out. On the bright side, I did end up with a SP Batman that day  [rock]

Heh! Me too. Were they made by Schleich back then? I see them in TRU now. Still cranking them out.

Yeah but TIGUW is mainly just you posting and only includes what you've had a chance to review to date out of what you love. ;)

Remember playing with that Batmobile as a kid- it's arguably the best Batmobile ever :).

In terms of my stuff, it's pretty much-

C.O.P.S.
Captain Power
Centurions
Defenders of the Earth
GI JOE (just getting into it)
M.A.S.K.
M.O.T.U. (just getting into it)
Neverending Story
Robotech
Transformers
Visionaries

On that note, I probably should show this WIP:

Definitely plenty of crossovers here- now to decide what to start topics on heh.

Damn I want that. Had it at as a kid; but the mother threw it out during one of her cleaning raids. :'(

What did they make for Neverending Story? Can't recall seeing figures for it.

Sadly like many I too suffer 1980s collections.
Thundercats
Golden Girl
Princess of Power
MOTU

I have far too many but you know what they say he who has the most toys still dies!

But when he dies all his collector friends say he was the winner. And then they get drunk and break in his house and steal everything from the widow.

It's all in the contract you sign when you start collecting toys.

I wish the contract had been clear about the nervous ebay bidding, frustrating aisle searching and disappointing paint apps

May main interests were....

-GI JOE
-MOTU
-SUPER POWERS
-SECRET WARS
-TRON
-STAR WARS to a lesser degree

I'm amazed at some of the stuff that I've found out about in my adulthood that I never knew about back then.  SECTAURS, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, SILVERHAWKS, etc...

As a child in the 80's Joe was my big line.  While I certainly didn't have everything, I had way more than most kids.  Because of that, my mom didn't let me get into other lines much, so I've gotten a lot of Transformers later in life.  I was not allowed any TMNT when they came out, so I usually get suckered into buying those when new lines start up as well.  Curiously I didn't get into superhero figures until after I got into comics in my pre-teens.

There was just something about GI JOE.  I had a shit ton of those, too.  I frigging loved those things!  The box artwork, the file cards, the comics...such a happy time!

Title: Re: What 80s toylines do you love?
Post by: Stars on September 11, 2013, 09:24:03 pm
I had the regular 70's stuff. Big Jim, Mego, Johnny West's Best of the West by Marx, Six Million Dollar Man, Star Wars, Micronauts, Lone Ranger.

Then into the 80's I had SW, Joes, TF's, MOTU, Blackstar, Tron, Clash of the Titans, Remco Monsters, Remco Eagle Force, Lone Ranger movie 3 3/4th, Flash Gordon, Dukes of Hazzard, Indiana Jones, AD&D, Thundercats, Super Powers, Sectaurs, Secret Wars, MASK.

I had a scant one or two in some lines, while in others I had quite a bit. My dad was a manager in a retail store (this was before big box stores like Wal-Mart took over), and he always bought us the "good stuff" for the Christmas of that year, so my toys were pretty varied. The last 80's line that I actually bought when they came out was SilverHawks.

Joe, AD&D and MOTU were my main ones.  But I had at least a couple of figures from so many lines I'm sure I couldn't think of them all at this point.  Loved Silverhawks, Visionaries, Remco monsters and wrestlers, Super Powers, Secret Wars...etc etc.

About the only line I see mentioned that I don't think I had any of is Blackstar...tbh I don't remember ever seeing those when I was a kid.

M.A.S.K.

That line was the shit. The character costumes with the removable helmets, the vehicles, and the cartoon were huge highlights of my early, early childhood years. It's probably the only toy line I'd go back and collect the old version of.

I started with Star Wars early and kept going with it for years.  I had well over 100 figures with most of their weapons, Death Star, Millenium Falcon, X-Wing, 4 of the smaller die-cast vehicles and more.  But I was told to downsize and sold it all at Garage sales.

Similar situation with GI Joe (80's).  I had almost all of the first few waves of figs, and some of the later.  The Pit, Hiss, Personnel Carrier, Jeep, Motorcycle, Bivuoac.  All in fine shape with all of the weapons.  Then my younger cousin came over, he liked them and I was told to give him everything.

With Masters of the Universe, I had about a dozen of the original figs, such as He-Man, Skeletor, Teela, Beast Man, MAA, Stratos, Zodac, Evil-lyn, Triklops, Ram Man, Battle Cat, Panthor, Mer-Man plus Castle Greyskull and Point Dread & The Talon Fighter.  I had to sell those at garage sales too, but somehow held onto the Castle.  I wish I still had Point Dread & The Talon Fighter, I really liked that one.

Had a handful of Secret Wars and AD&D and Lone Ranger.  I know the first is gone, I'm not sure about the later.

I had a few of the Super Friends mego's I think.  I don't remember them well and the costumes got kind of trashed.

I had a dozen or so smurfs and some houses, those are still around.

I had several Lego sets, a couple police and several medieval.  Those I still have all of, but idk about the instructions.

Transformers is what I was able to hold onto.  Jetfire got hit with some mold and Prowl was broken, but the rest of my several dozen are in good shape.  Soundwave and all his original tapes, the three Decepticon jets, most of the common autobots from the first few waves, including red bumblebee.  Some Constructicons, Aerialbots, etc.  I think the last one I got was Rodimus Prime.  Somehow I never got most of the major ones though, no Optimus, Megatron, Shockwave, Ultra Magnus.

Everything I still have is stored away and I haven't seen it in years, but I feel good knowing I have it and hopefully in a couple years I'll have more space to bring it out.

So I never had a SP Batmobile as a kid. But one of the neighborhood kids, Joey K. Did.

Joey wasn't any better off than my family, and to be fair, My brothers and I didn't want for much.  But Joey Got whatever he wanted, and lorded it over all the other kids in the neighborhood.

Many years later, I did get the Batmobile, and it is still part of my collection, and in Great shape.

A couple weeks ago, I looked Joey up on Google, and found out he STILL has something I never will....A DUI arrest.

Every kid had your main lines, transformers gi joe and he man. They were fun no doubt but i loved things like power lords, wheeled warriors, bravestarr and silver hawks. My all time favorite silver hawk was the green guy who could time jump....flashback. Oh and exo squad ( had every exo squad toy released) and mask ( same deal).
