Can't make up my mind about how to do Capt. America's chainmail/scales  :-\
I really don't want to sacrifice a figure to do it, either.

What's the base?

2 options. You either need to get a figure with Scales and make a reverse Mould of their scales and stamp that into your epoxy.Or,get some medical hypodermic Needles 21 & 18g,grind down the tips just a tad and make chain mail.Although that is a very tedious, but very effective, job.
Some Customisers buy cheap Glomesh bags off Ebay and use that for Mail, hate that one myself.

What's the base?

DCUC Nightwing with DCD JLA Atom head.

This is what I'm thinking of doing. Suggestions for what to use for making the mould?

Oh, I will. Just need a game plan for the scales. At the moment all that's left for the sculpting in the scales, head wings and shield.

Okey doke, this is gonna take you a bit of time but it's worth it.For your first Mould use whatever you like,Das,Sculpey,Epoxy doesn't really matter. Some guys even use Plasticine for this part but that's too weak if you ask me,but i digress.
Find a good, flat spot to make an impression and press your Epoxy/whatever into the scales. You only need a stamp of a small area, don't try to make a massive one as when you try to stamp into tight areas you won't get an effective, uniform result.
Let your stamp cure of course, then it's time to make the reverse stamp that will eventually be the one you will be using.
Coat the inside of your Mould with vaseline to make sure the new pour won't stick. You'll have to get yourself some casting Resin, mix it up and pour it into your original Mould.Careful of air bubbles, give it a few light taps i find usually gets rid of them.Believe me casting can be tricky,i found like most things you have to practice a bit to get it right.
Once it's dry you have your stamp.Spread your Sculpey/Epoxy over the area you want to cover in Mail and go for it.Take your time to make sure it all lines up.
This is an abridged version for you, hope it helps. ;D

Title: Who the hell is Tim Drake? WIP
Post by: dozymuppet on April 12, 2009, 06:08:22 am
The boy didn't mind his DCUC Robin figure, but being a fan of both the 1966 TV series, and Teen Titans Go!, he asked if I could paint Robin's gloves and legs green. Then I suggested that maybe I need to also give him sleeves. "I wholeheartedly agree, Dad!", or something to that effect. Anyway, what a project this has turned into!

So far, cape, belt and head removed, some extra sculpting for the gloves and boots (inc. steel caps), and added short sleeves. Also filled in the techno bits on the vest, and toned down the adolescent 'roid-ness by filling in the pecs and abs.

After a first primer, saw things that needed filling that couldn't be seen previously (working with black is hard on the eyes!).

More primer tomorrow.

Still need to make a new belt, trim the cape, and to figure our what to do with the head. The major problem with these DCUC kids' bodies is that the heads are just mini-adult. They're not realistically proportioned to be a kid's head. They should be proportionately larger than an adult's in terms of a head:body ratio.

He's looking great Dozy, love that you're covering the minor details like the Steel Caps and toning down the Abs.I have this fig too,one of only 2 DCUC figs i actually own and was thinking of converting him to Drake's more traditional Red and Green.Really keen to see how this turns out!I do agree on the Head, the original with that would be ok or maybe a DCSH Robin head might do the trick.Got one here if you want to try it.

Title: Re: Dozy's Capt.America WIP thread
Post by: dozymuppet on April 12, 2009, 06:17:45 am
OK, here it is so far:

I think the head will look a bit less goofy once I've put a coat of primer on it, as I've added a bit of brow. The belt (DCUC Robin's) isn't yet attached.

I'm rethinking the scales, as I realised I'm going to have a hell of a time with the shoulders if I add epoxy to them. I might go the other route after all.

Sorry Mate i can't rearrange them, had a look but there's no options to do that.

He's looking good,i understand what you're saying about the goofy looking head.Sometime you put pieces together and their varying colours throw the whole thing off.It will be fine though i can see that.
Belt Buckle detail looks good and the brow looks nice and even.
So are you going to sculpt mail instead?

Nah, I think somehow I'm going to etch it in, with a bit of heat assist. The mail on DCD New Gods Barda looks achievable.

They're applied using a re-fashioned piece of broken paint brush handle, heated over a candle.

That's last night's rough cut. I've since sanded it back to a cleaner finish, and will post another update soon. I'm really looking forward to getting the paint going now. This was a really big issue, which could possibly have killed the project. Now all I need is his shield and those feather things for his head, and I'll have all the parts!

Yeah, Teen Titans Go! was the inspiration for this one. I figure DCUC will come out with a standard Dick Grayson Robin at some stage.

Nice work, really original.

Although it's worth noting that cartoon Dick Graysons since the 90s have all worn Tim Drake's costume too...So in a sense, you made another Tim Drake.

Thanks fellas.

Raj, if I had to it again, I'd probably tone down the arms as well to give him more of an adolescent look.

And thanks for the Robin head FB. I was a bit sceptical at first, but I sculpted on a bit of fat, and painted in the hair, and it did the trick!

Modified Guardian head
Firestorm torso and shoulders, with much scraping, sanding, filling
Booster Gold arms, scraped and sanded
Superman legs

I was just trying to use whatever I had lying around at the time, which is why the Booster Gold arms. Wish I'd been skilful enough at the time of the frankensteining to replace the shoulders, but happy with the outcome.

Bit of a proof of concept I've been working on/putting off for ages now. Never really been happy with the "silver" Silver Surfer figures that get released, not being "comic accurate", in old school terms:

Can't really see the Tamiya pearl white in action here, but you get the picture:

I like it, but might try the Folk Art pearl white next time.

Geez Dozy, you are certainly on a roll lately.SS looks so slick and clean and it's nice to see one that isn't Silver for a change.

I have no idea who the"Mess Con"guy is[i'm guessing Firestorm related]but damn that's some fine work!Beautifully clean lines and just the perfect overall finish.Colours are strong and wonderfully even too.You deserve to have another win under your belt with that piece.Outstanding mate!

Great work dozy, is it just the light source or does the cape change colour at the end?

Also, the mask and eyes are just brilliant!!!

Post by: dozymuppet on June 03, 2011, 08:54:33 am
Thanks fellas!

Just the light source with the cape.

A couple of cons and some overdue projects make it look like I've been more prolific than I actually have been.

Don't like my chances of winning the Mess con, but I got through the first round.

Thanks fella.

I used Mr Hobby's Topcoat on this, instead of the usual Dullcote. Topcoat seems to gives more of a satiny finish. I can see uses for both.

Testors make all three. I'm sure I have Dullcote, Glosscote and SatinCote.

How do they go on capes?

Well Gladiator's cape is still a bit tacky here and there, but Son of Satan's is the same colour but this time I put it outside in the sun to really make sure it cured properly then hit it with the Dullcote which seems to have worked.

Title: Re: dozymuppet's customs (Multiplex, p6)
Post by: FB on June 05, 2011, 06:41:22 am
Capes are the absolute bane of my existence.I can use the same method over end over and 90% of the time they dry no worries but just occasionally you get the permanently tacky one or the one that the paint rubs off even after you seal it.Feels like there's no perfect answer sometimes.

Iron First has been in various states of progress over what I'm guessing is two years. Finally got it done though!

Pretty happy with it, though somewhere along the way I thought I should've used the slimmer DCUC buck [whistle]. Oh, and I hand-painted that chest symbol, in case anybody is wondering...

Title: Re: dozymuppet's customs (Iron Fist, p8)
Post by: dozymuppet on August 20, 2011, 11:31:03 pm
Thanks guys. The belt is some ribbon, with way too many coats of paint. The mask ties are a much simpler ribbon, in the right colour... One of the problems of picking it up and putting it down so often.

Slipknot
Firestorm villain, and Suicide Squad member
First appearance: Fury of Firestorm #28

WIP pic: I used masking fluid to help out here, mostly to make sure the orange was bright (i.e. I didn't want to be painting orange over black).

Masking fluid is pretty effective, though scary when unknown (will it actually work?!). Just as with tape, you need to make sure everything is sealed off - Some paint leaked into one of his eyes, which was a pain to tidy up.

Another thing with this figure I hadn't done before was a matt paint, with a flat clear coat. Oddly, it came out with just the right amount of sheen I wanted for the black on Slipknot's costume, which is more obviously a fabric costume than most costumes.
