Title: "Mego - World's Greatest Superheros" the AFB Podcast E27 Discussion Topic
Post by: fishmilkshake on August 24, 2012, 06:25:07 pm
On episode 27 of the AFB podcast our discussion topic is a retrospective of the MEGO - World's Greatest Superhero line.

What are your memories of the line?
Which figures did you have?
Do you still have any of them today?

Mego is the reason people mistake Action figures with dolls...  ;D

I don't think Mego ever get to Argentina, should investigate that, but when I was a kid in the 80s I started with Masters of the Universe and Super Powers, so, I never owned a Mego, and they have no real meaning or nostalgia for me.

I thought everyone who was old enough to play with Megos was Andy.

Hah!

As I mentioned in the show last night, I don't remember seeing them in my city growing up. I don't even remember friends having them either....or at flea markets.

I never know if you're referring to me or Scotty. ???

If it was me yes i remember these guys really well at the Toy Shops. They were such a cool discovery and lots of my Friends had them too.
I had quite a few,the ones i can remember definitely having is Spiderman,Superman,Robin[must have had Batman but not sure],also had some of the Medievel Knights and even the Muhammed Ali.Never had any of the Playsets or Vehicles though unfortunatley.
The good thing is when the crappy Elastic that held the arms and Legs in place broke it was just a quick raid of Mum's Sewing Kit for more elastic and you were soon back in action.

Whenever I say Andy, I'm talking about "Scotty." Old habits.

I remember Megos still being sold at discount stores when I was younger. I think up until the first Toy Biz figures hit they could still be found at Cheap Johns, Odd Jobs, etc. Never had any as a kid though.

First one I bought was Spider-Man at a flea market. Because of his appearances in ToyFare I had to have one. I now have most of a "Mego" JLA thanks to Mattel and a Two-Face. Also have a Captain Kirk and Gorn Captain. Been buying all the Twilight Zone, Dark Shadows; and Dr. Who dolls as well. I like the style. Wish I could get an Iron Man and Thor at some point. Maybe Hulk too.

They seem to be cheap enough on ebay if you don't want MOC or completely 'complete'.

I think you'll enjoy ep27. Brian from the Mego Museum was on and he was very cool. Amazing amounts of knowledge.

I loved Megos. I remember I had Batman, Superman, Robin, Aquaman and Spiderman when I was really young, and also remember the change to the g2 body for the Planet of the Apes line.

There was a licensee (CIPSA, I think) that produced a mexican version, but even though the figures were the same, by the time the oil crisis hit the costumes were not as nice as in the american figures. As an example, the american Apes had spandex leggins, but the mexican ones had bare legs.

I hadn't think of it, but I remember I lost my Aquaman in a taxi one day, and that sense of loss is almost as vivid today as it was then.

I will award you a point for easing the pain of your lost Aquaman.
