Title: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on May 19, 2009, 06:29:03 pm
Hi everybody, My name is Tom. I'm from Argentina (the other down under) and I wanted to show you my collection.
Some time ago I made a blog to keep track of my things but didn't updated it often. After checking out your wonderful displays I wanted to do it, so I leave you the link to my blog.

www.freakstudios.blogspot.com (http://www.freakstudios.blogspot.com)

The pics you'll see are just a part of the collection I'll be uploading more real soon. The figures are all around the house now, but I'm making a big display in one of the rooms.

I'll show that when is finished.

Hope you enjoy it.

T.

Welcome welcome Tom! (may we call you 'Freak' for short?)

Great looking collection you have there and that's a fantastic effort to get all those JLU figures! And only one figure missing!! That must be very frustrating.

You'll have to let us know what it's like obtaining toys in Argentina? Do you get many toys at retail stores or do you buy most over the internet?

That's a great collection Tom,love the way you've blended brands together in your DC figs. And that JLU collection is mighty impressive,i don't know how you JLU collectors manage it.

One of my favourite things to see in people's collections is what they collect apart from Marvel and DC stuff,it's always really varied and interesting.

Hi everybody. I have updated the blog with some new Batman figures.

This is kind of embarrassing, but I don't know how to upload pics to the forum. If you explain it to me I'll put a picture here everytime I upload the others in the blog.

Sweet displays.  You've got a good variety of figures.  Love to see all the DCD and DCSH/DCUC figures all mixed together.

I've got a new favorite figure:

DC Direct's Swamp Thing.

Love it.

I've gotta pick that up one day, to display with all the nice Swamp Thing hardcovers I'm going to have by the end of the year.

A beautiful figure because it's actually based on the DC statue sculpted by William Paquet. The statue is amazingly detailed with lots of little flowers, frogs, etc on the base. Mine is currently packed away in the garage :(

At least I did get good money for it, but still......

I hear you. I sold my original Bowen Magneto statue (he's done two) because I didn't think there would be any new Bowen Marvel ones coming and decided to focus on DC. Sigh!

Thanks for the replies, I really like the figure and wanted to share it.

By the way, I picked up this bad boy a few days ago.

I really like how you can display it with all the weapons. Now I got the figures of the two best assasins in the DC Universe.

Is that the first DCD version or the DCUC? I've always thought the DCD one was a perfect sculpt but just a tad short.

For sure. Just hope they throw in the unmasked head.

But that mask is so cool. You must have the mask!

By the way, new figure update. This week I found four new Ninja Turtle figures and was able to buy them, before the other three TMNT collectors in the country. Joy!

As I said in my blog, is really hard to get TMNT figures in Argentina. Most of the 'obscure' characters never reach the stores in the 80's and 90's. So the only way to get them was to know the very few places that had them (that is, had them smuggled through customs).

The best place was a toy store that specialized in American toys, the name of the store was Pity Dan’s (a fairly depressing name, now that I understand English). Most of my original collection, twenty figures or so, comes from there. The owner must have loved my dad and grandfathers.

The rest I got thanks to an even greater and an even ‘pitier’ Dan: The Internet.

More pics in my blog.

Great find FS. There's TNMT aplenty here in Oz so if there is anything specific you are looking for please let us know and I'm between the Aussies here we could sort you out.

Nice pick-up FS.

It's always great to come across something you really want in the toy aisle.

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on May 28, 2009, 11:32:49 pm
New figure and seven rules to cheat yourself.

I have a rule about collecting toys and is that I don't buy the same character twice in the same format. Meaning I can have a statue of Batman, and the JLU figure and an action figure, but that I won't display the 500 variations of the basically same JLU Batman.

I've made some exceptions in the past: I bought a second Scarecrow, since the first I bought had nothing to do with the comics I enjoyed. I bought a second Joker, because I had the one from Hush and I think is really really horrible and wanted to replace it. And finally I bought the Batman from JLI (I already had the one from Hush) because that particular comic book was so important to me that I want the complete series. And because "c'mon, It's Batman".

Today I saw the First Appearance Blue Beetle from Dc Direct. And I bought it.

And although I don't have a figure of this character I'm expecting the one from JLI wave 2. So I stated some rules to cheat on my own principle:

1) Is not really the same character, one is Ted Kord, the other is Jaime Reyes and they don't even share a costume.
2) It's not going to be on my DC Characters/JLA display so it won't clash with my other Blue Beetle, when I get it. But if not there, where is it going to go?
3) I really like the character of the new Blue Beetle from the Batman brave and the bold series. Actually that's the first time a paid any attention to that character.
4) I'm not going to buy the Brave and the Bold toy series, since is really hard to get in Argentina and I don't like it that much.
5) I guess I can put it with my Batman display as an homage to Brave and the Bold.
6) Yeah that sounds logical enough, let's do that!

And finally, the incredibly important rule number seven:

7) Guilt? What the hell is that?

Hah! That's great FS! A point for that brilliant logic!

I do agree with a lot of what you said though. I don't have a problem buying multiples of a character, however I'll only display one of each. So when I have my X-Men display of Marvel Legends, I choose one Wolverine to put with them, etc.

It's funny, as much as I hate that they killed Ted I don't hold it against Jaime. He's a great character and I miss his book - glad he's getting a backup feature at least. Somehow I think there's room for both Beetles in the DCU if/when they decide to bring Ted back.

Even Aunt May came back! Aunt May!

But what happens when the character decides to stay dead, that's what Ted Kord did.

This week I got a ton of figures (Well, not a ton, ten... But you can say is a typo). 4 DCUC and 6 Dc Direct. Pictures and uploads very soon.

And to create expectations: I got a figure I've been looking for almost a year!

Nah, she's not dead.  But because of how Joe Q went about doing what he did, I wish maybe she had died.

Exactly. Not only did he orchestrate the "One More Day" story that changed continuity, but her next major appearance in the new 'Spideyverse' was as the mistreated girlfriend of some rich loser. Oh yes, Joe Q ranks highly on my list of people I'd like to be locked in a room with.

Title: Re: My freaky collection

Ah, so many on that list. I'll add Garth Ennis, just because he fucked up Hellraiser (even before Keanu). And because of all the comic writers I know, I think he would put up a good fight. That's important too.

In other news: My new display is growing. As I hinted (I mean, I just plain said it) in Andy's blog. I'm forming a JLI/JLE display using DCD and DCUC figures.

First, DC Direct's Dr. Light from Crisis; Captain Marvel from Superman/Batman (the look on his face is perfect for the Giffen comic relief style) and Elongated Man from JLA (Again, I chose this over the Identity Crisis one because of the look on his face).

Next DC Universe Classics' Mr. Miracle, Big Barda (with the helmet), Captain Atom and Metamorpho (I get this complete for an awesome price!)

And finally a figure I've been searching for almost a year, almost impossible to find in Argentina (without ordering it from ebay).

This one showed up in an auction in ebay-like site we have here. Hours before seeing it I lost a DCD Elongated Man (I got it later though, lucky me), so I wasn't going to take chances. You can't imagine my happiness when I realized I knew the guy selling it, I had bought things from him in the past, so I called him up and said "how much do you want to close the auction now?", He named his price (a lot less of what I was willing to offer  ::)), and I got it.

I know is kinda cheating...

But I don't care.  ;D

There's a group shot in my blog.

Let's start nice and slow:

here is a pic of my Neca MOTU statues.

And now...

Update! Update!

I'm so happy about this I couldn't wait. I finally finished my shelves for display!  ;D

First a pic of the shelves before the glass doors were installed...

Now after a couple months of planning, my showcase is completed, and I can't to put my figures there!

Progress report:

Still lots of work to do.

If you look closely the last pics, you can almost see my handsome reflection there, I saw that when I uploaded the pic but let it slide as a present for the ladies.

I know, I know, a forum about action figures is probably not the best place to mention the ladies... Except for Saranga! (I must say that, otherwise she might get angry... And she scares me).

Luckily for everybody I was wearing pants when the picture was taken. I don't usually rearrange figures in the buff.

(that "usually" will come back to haunt me, I just know that)

Not that I'm censoring or anything... But to take the conversation away from FMS lack of pants I have a pic...

I got her today, and she's just so pretty:

She only stayed in the JLE for one mission, but that's more of an excuse to own this figure...

And speaking of excuses, look guys is L-Ron!

This is how my JLI display is coming so far...

The way I see it, I'm missing Flash, Fire, Martian Manhunter, Booster (the DCD JLI version), Blue Beetle, Dr Fate, Guy Gardner, Power Girl and Creeper (not an official member, but had runs into the JLI, just like Lobo). Also, I would need a Rocket Red and a Crimson Fox, but don't see a lot of chances of DCD making them, perhaps DCUC, fingers crossed, or it's customs for me.

Am I missing anybody?

Title: Re: My freaky collection

While I'm happy to talk about my lack of pants, I will say that the JLI display is coming along nicely FS!
My only comment is that Black Canary....if there's evidence required that the 80s was not kind to fashion this is it!

Personally, I don't own a Wham! T-shirt, but since I am a freak child of the 80's I do have one of Oingo Boingo.

Note: This is not the image my shirt, but is a lot funnier.

And here is my MOTU 2002 collection. I was waiting to pick up Teela and Sy-Klone. But now that I have them I can post the pictures.

Bad guys first (always liked the bad guys best)

And now the good guys...

I started this collection really late, so it was fairly complicated to get it to this point. Now I only need Faker and Zodak...

And I'm still deciding if I need a Prince Adam... Impressive I can say that without feeling totally gay...

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: fishmilkshake on June 08, 2009, 02:40:37 am
Hey, if Prince Adam is part of the series and you want them all then there is nothing wrong with that!
Your collection looks so good you might as well make it complete.

Heh! My wife was watching a music channel and the 'Wake me up before you go-go" video clip came on and she was cringing.
The 80s were not kind to fashion.....and George Michael's hair in that clip....oiiiii!

C'mon! What? Did you spend the 80's just listenintg to Wham? You need to balance man, after all, "all Wham and no He-man makes FS a dull boy".

Prince Adam was He-man's Clark Kent, he was shy and mellow like Clark, the only differece is that he was a lot more pink...

And a lot more... ehm... Fabulous...  :-\

Anyway, this is the figure I'm considering... They really tone it down in 2002.  ;D

Sorry, I was six when He-Man premiered in Argentina. And thinking as any kid that age, I assumed (and sometimes I still do) that everyone was into He-man and Thundercats.

I remember explaining the complete story of Eternia (that's He-man's planet) to my parents over and over... Their patience, and the surprisingly lack of beatings amazes me even now.

I should invite them to dinner...  :D

Prince Adam was He-man's Clark Kent, he was shy and mellow like Clark, the only differece is that he was a lot more pink...

Honestly! What were they thinking? Did a group of people sit around a table and say "Yep, that's the look we want"?

Just look at the names of the characters, the entire cast is basically created based on bad puns:
Stinkor, He-ro, Two Bad, Clawful, Tri-klops, Fisto, Macaneck, Man-E-Faces, Buzz Off, and so on...

I'm guessing we'll never see a more substance induced series of characters as long as we live.

GOOD GRIEF!!! That's seventeen kinds of wrong!!!

"Masters of the Universe" the cartoon show came after the toy series debuted. The TV show set a landmark ruling in the US that a show must come before the merchandise as it was deemed as nothing but a half hour commercial for the toys. It was pretty obvious that the show was cheap as they reused the animation over and over again. Even allt he monsters made the same noise  :P

Three additions to Batman allies:

Commissioner Gordon, Jonah Hex and Batman Beyond. I know Jonah Hex is kind of a long shot, but he has a tendency of showing up all the time in Batman comics.

I also got two more bad guys, but I don't have the pics yet.

Man, that future Batman's costume is really really shinny...

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on June 14, 2009, 03:50:15 pm
The only thing I'm not thrilled is that the girl of the movie is Megan Fox, an actress I hated in Transformers (true, I hated the entire movie, but that does not excuse her). Don't get me wrong, the girl is hot, but she's terrible. And she'll stay in the "terrible" category, at least until she proves she can act, so far she didn't... Perhaps Jonah Hex can make me change my mind.

But can't be angry about anything today, because with some sunlight, a little water, and lots and lots of love my Justice League display keeps growing.

I chose the Superman from Trinity because I like the lack of definition in his muscles (is my theory about Superman that a guy super strong since birth cant't really develop muscles since nothing is actually heavy enough to make them work out), and because of his kinda dumb face... Hehe (Hardcore Batman fan? Me?).
You were right Andy, this DCUC Hawk Man is absolutely awesome, so is the Flash, and I like Firestorm a lot too.
I really prefer the Top Hat and fishnets Zatanna, but this is the one that goes with the 80's vibe (the actual vibe, not the character) I'm going for.
And I know that the Red Tornado from Alex Ross' Justice is a little bit bigger than the others, but since he's an android, I don't mind him being a little off scale.

And if you want to see the complete set, this is how it's going so far:

Martian Manhunter (JLI)
Blue Beetle (JLI)
Fire (JLI)
Guy Gardner (GL)
Power Girl (DCUC or Infinite Crisis)
Creeper (History of DCU)
Vixen (DC Direct)

From DCUC
Green Arrow
Aquaman
Hawkgirl
Dr Fate (DCUC)

From... Who knows?
Crimson Fox (?)
Rocket Red (?)
Vibe (?)
Gypsy (?)

Any particular DCD Booster Gold?  Not sure how many they've made, but the one I have from the Infinite Crisis line that's been replaced by the DCUC classic version in my display.

Yeah, that's the one form 52 and is the one I currently have. I saw de DCUC one and is great (also the Blue Beetle) but I'm waiting for the DCD JLI series, since is a series I plan to complete and besides the look of that figure is amazing, the two thumbs up, winning smile combo captures the essence of the character incredibly well...

I'm not sure about the thumbs up. Does he come with alternate hands?

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on June 22, 2009, 10:54:49 am
I really can´t tell if Booster comes with alternate hands, none of the figures in wave 1 did, but perhaps wave 2 will be different. J'onn Jonzz comes with an Oreo in his hand, a detail I really like.

And now for something completely different: a part of my collection I've never shown.

In 1998 I bought the Pike from Playmates' Wildc.a.t.s (a 1994 series I think) in a toy sale outdoors. A couple of years later I bought a Spartan, and then four more (Warbalde, Maul, a Daemonite and Slag). I did it not with the entire collection in mind (I recently knew how many figures it had), but just for fun since I enjoyed the comic and my girlfriend liked the cartoon.

This year I decided to investigate this line and discovered that only 13 figures were made (if you don't count the variants, and I don't). So I asked a friend to keep an eye open for ebay possibilities. Then, he won for me the best auction in the history of ebay, ever...

Seriously...

And now I have four more figures (Void, Voodoo, Mr. Majestic and my all time favorite Grifter), giving me a grand total of 10 out of 13. I'll try to complete this series now.

Here's a nice group shot.

I will be looking for Zealot, Helspont and Black Razor to complete this display.

I remember those. I got the first series dirt cheap, in fact I think they were free. I was managing the comic shop side of an entertainment store and we got an extra box from Diamond that we didn't order. I sold one set which paid for the shipping and handling and the rest were freebies. They were pretty cool. I might still have them, I'll take a look for you. ;D

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on June 23, 2009, 03:59:44 pm
That would be great Tyroc. The good thing about these figures is that they are kinda cheap, the bad thing is that they are almost impossible to get in Argentina, since most of the collectors I know think they are awful. I prefer to think they are... Vintage.

Also, I got a lot of figures for the Batman display, the thing about displays is that they made you buy figures you never in your life thought you were going to buy...

I'll upload pictures soon, but for now here's a sample:

Finally here: Big Batman update.

First the least threatening villain ever.

Unless you're scared of Sigmund Freud. I like how the pic turned out though.

Next is one of the least known villains ever:

But I really liked the figure. In the not very known villains category I also goy Hush, but I don't have a picture yet.

And then I got this two huge guys:

I didn't expect the DCSH Clayface to be that big, but I love it.
And the Bane is the one from Knightfall. I used to have the Yamato one, but that one was tiny tiny...

... How tiny? You may ask, allow me to demonstrate with this totally unadulterated (just a little chemically enhanced) pic:

That's all for now, I'll have more news of my Justice League display soon.

And here's the complete Batman display.

Still waiting to find a decent Catwoman (not that she's ever been decent...), probably the one from Hush, or DC Super Heroes.

And I will add the Gentleman Ghost from DCUC when I get it too.

The death in the family we're all expecting...

But as much as I hate to admit it, FMS has a point... Damian IS a Batman character... So, if I see him at a reasonable price (and that means really really cheap) I'll buy it for the display.

It's actually quite sad! I read the new Batman issue and Damian was only in it for a few pages I was loathing him to a new level. If he's going to be a prominent character then my interest in the title will drop considerably.

This week I added two more figures to the Justice League display:

So I'll show them to you, with a nice interactive trivia game...

Green Lantern (from DCUC, it was really hard to decide if I wanted this one or the DCD JLA one) I already got G'nort and he's the second GL I want for this display, can you guess the other two? (the answer at the end of this post)*

And the Vice President of Boobs herself, Vixen. Can you tell me, dear reader, who the President of Boobs is? This should be fairly easy. **

And I also got a mistery figure, the one that FMS wants to put in the meat grinder, you know who he is.

I told you I was going to get him if I saw it really cheap. Well, that actually happened. I don't know if this happens everywhere, but here in Argentina we have a few parks where people get together to sell all sort of things like stamps, books, CDs, records, games and of course, toys. Mostly you get old shitty toys like McDonalds happy meal toys. But you can also find the eventual loose figure or even one still in the blister. Each park has its own codes and places to look, I still can't understand some of them. I'll try to take a picture of one of this parks next week, would you like that?

The thing is that I was looking around and I found Damian (that's the third answer if you weren't paying attention) he was loose but in perfect condition of paint and articulations. Apparently someone bought the Robin but left the little guy, so I could buy him for three bucks! I thought that was a worthy price for a little annoying shrimp. And now I got him too.

By the way:

* If you guessed "Guy Gardner and Killowog" you were incredibly correct.

** The President of Boobs is non other than Power Girl, of course.

I'm intrigued to know what would you make out of him. Because he's really really small. So, besides a Billy Batson, Mr. Mxyzpltk, that weird alien kid from Silverhawks or the midget serial killer from Dario Argento's film sleepless... I can't think of anything... Uh... You can make a Scarface, and use Hugo Strange's head to make the Ventriloquist... Or get a big body in a suit (like Kingpin or something) and use the squirt's little head and paint the hair yellow to make a Babyface... Or a Bat-mite... Or a Space monkey in a bag...

OK, now I see the potential.

For now, here's an image of a one-sided fight that will make Andy and FMS very very happy.

Good day today.
Did you ever saw a figure and thought "wow, that's cool, but too much random things need to happen for me to get that"?. That happened to me when I first saw the convention exclusive Keldor figure. Keldor (this is for you Andy) was MOTU's villain Skeletor, but before he was turned into Skeletor with a very useful flask of acid to the face.
The figure looks great, comes with three heads (a regular one, a Skeletor one and one that's burning with the acid).
When I saw it first I said "that's a great looking acid burning figure", but at the time I wasn't even collecting MOTU 2000, so buying a convention exclusive of a line I wasn't even following seemed kinda stupid.
Then I started to collect them, but then I thought, that figure came out 5 years ago, I'll never get it now.
Well turns out I was wrong. I just got it today.

Of course I went with the burning head, the regular one is at his feet.

Yes FMS, I also got a Prince Adam... If I have a Keldor, I must have a Prince Adam.

And last week I got a Zodak...

So now I'm down to one ONE figure left to complete the collection.

The also convention exclusive (damn!) Faker

Hey guys,  have some new additions for the Justice League display:

Yes Andy, that's the DCUC Dr. Fate you sent me! Thanks mate!
That Power Girl is just gorgeous, from DCD Infinite Crisis.
And the Flash is from DCD too. Justice League of America, year 2003. I had a Barry Allen Flash, but needed a Wally West. And he totally rocks! He's slim, and has less muscles than some other characters. And that's how I think Flash has to be. Not the McGuiness abomination.

Here's a group shot:

I don't. It was 50 US bucks (more or less depending on the exchange rate). The good thing was that the seller was here in Argentina, so almost no shipping cost.

I could get my vintage freak on today, because I got some new ninja turtles figures. I don't think there's a lot of people collecting these, I saw one or two in this forum, but is more an exception than a rule right?

Anyway, these are new 5 figures I got:

Three of them I needed from the start: Merdude (the mermaid-man that looks like the result of an angry pirate cliché fucking a particularly ugly fish), Zak, the Neutrino (The 80's excuse for a Space Rocker) and Chrome Dome (your average robot samurai).

But the other two are weird choices for me: first there's Krang's android (complete with an alien brain, that would be Krang, in his stomach), I already had a Krang, but this kinda is a different character, so I'll let it slip.

For the other I have no other excuse but to say I was tempted. The Werewolf is my all time favorite classic movie monster and Leonardo is my all time favorite turtle, a combination of both in a figure (from the weirdest wave of the line, the turtles as the Universal Studios Monsters) was just to much for me to resist.

Plus, he glows in the dark!

In my blog (www.freakstudios.blogspot.com (http://www.freakstudios.blogspot.com)) there are larger pics of my entire collection as it is right now.

Something old, something new... My Justice League display is starting to sound like a wedding... When I get Blue Devil I'll have something blue too...  ::)

This are the latest additions:

I looked for that Guy Gardner for a while and he wasn't easy to find, I passed several times the opportunity of buying the new figure (the one with the not-so-dorky-hairdo) but I wanted this one, because is that pathetic Green Lantern, with that pathetic hair the one I loved from JLI. He also comes with a power ring that I will use eventually, probably when invited to a formal dinner party.

And for the second figure, you were right Andy, that DCUC Hawk Girl is absolutely stunning.

In my blog (www.freakstudios.blogspot.com (http://www.freakstudios.blogspot.com)) I'll soon post larger and individual pics.

I just had one of those weeks, collectors can expect their whole lives... A lot of stuff I've been waiting for, arrived... At the same time... And other stuff I wanted just popped up in front of my face ready for me to grab it.

And I had the money to do it too!  ;D

So, feast your eyes on this week's loot:

Includes:

Futurama (Waves 1-5) - So cool!

Gentleman Ghost and Mini Atom (DCUC) - Just love the mini guy!

Phantom Stranger (DCD) - Love this figure and got it incredibly cheap too

Aquaman (DCUC) - Congratulate me! Is my first Aquaman figure!

Solomon Grundy (DCUC) - Man, he's huge. He'll give my Knightfall Bane a run for his money.

Catwoman (DCSH) - Finally I got that damn Cat, was't easy.

Orion and Lightray (DCUC Two Pack) - For my Justice League display

Judge Dredd and Judge Death (Legendary Comic Book Heroes) - Not a fan of the ball jointed legs... But very cool figures indeed.

Clownface and Panda (Legendary Comic Book Heroes) - My friends tease me, tell me I'm the only guy alive that actually read Bodybags...

In my blog there are bigger pictures. I'll update individual pics soon.

Justice League:

Batman villains (OK, Solomon Grundy is a GL villain by nature... But was created on Gotham, so... Batman villain. Same thing with Gentleman Ghost):

Futurama (I'm so happy with this guys, they look amazing, and Nixon's head is bonus. An extra figure on his own):

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on August 27, 2009, 09:10:23 pm
Today I got this:

Toynami's Blue Falcon with Dyno-Mutt. Probably of all Hanna Barbera heroes he was my least favorite (except in Laff-a-Lympics, he was just cool there). But I got him because this figure looks amazing, and because I wanted him to join this particular Justice League:

As I said before, I wasn't a huge Hannah Barbera fan when I was a kid, always thought that Warner Brothers and Disney were better. But I am a huge fan of the creative teams that made Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at law. So, if this is a way to own Tad Ghostal, Harvey Birdman and Antonio de Ribera García Azul Falcón (a.k.a. Blue) then by all means I love to have them in my cartoon DVD library. I like to have my movie figures in my live action DVD library and my cartoon figures in this one...

In case you want a pic of how it looks:

(R2D2 and C-3PO are there 'cause I have a Droids DVD too... I know, I know...)

Title: Re: My freaky collection

'Droids' not so bad.....but Ewoks!!!!! For shame!

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on August 28, 2009, 08:20:03 am
Hey, it was a two-pack (Droids and Ewoks), there's no shame in buying two DVDs por the price of one (well, maybe a little if one of those is Ewoks) but anyway, I watched both when I was a kid, and they're both really lame... But so is half the episodes of Thundercats and nobody complains about that... I also have a lot of SpongeBob DVDs too, and stuff I just got from distribution companies (I get lots of this stuff for free y'know?)...

By the way, does anyone remember the Ewoks live action movie?

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: fishmilkshake on August 29, 2009, 06:34:19 pm
Go easy on the Thundercats, it's way better than a lot of the other stuff at the time such as He-Man with it's "let's just reshuffle the same animation from last week"....except for 'Snarf', we could live without Snarf.

Ewoks live action films? No, they don't exist in the 'shakeuniverse

I finally was able to see my friend and he got this for me. Of course, I paid for it, but he still got it.  :D
I have to admit, that I was a little concerned, after reading how some people thought they were going to get the damned monkey and turned out they didn't, although they bought the set at the SDCC.

But the bag with the monkey was there in all its blue and kinda-happy-meal-toy-look glory.

And this is how he looks without the bag (yes! I opened the fucking thing!)

Surely the Super monkey needed those human companions Purple boy and Pointy hair girl (or whatever their names are). I really like the third Side Kick of the monkey: "Face in a bucket man"

The package is impressive, but Mr. Andy already took care of that. No relevant QC issues either.

I'm quite happy with this Galaxy Trio, the only question I have now is: Do they go with my DC characters or with my Hanna Barbera characters...

Oh, the doubts, I won't be able to sleep tonight...

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Scotty on September 01, 2009, 11:02:39 pm
Hey FS - really glad you got this set and are happy. For me, however, that picture just reinforces that I really don't get the Gleek-o-mania. Making this an exclusive was a grand marketing strategy, because I seriously doubt this set would have been such scalper fodder otherwise.

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on September 01, 2009, 11:19:13 pm
Probably, and by probably I mean certainly, I would have gotten the set anyway, because the characters amuse me and take me back to the Super Friend campy animated world I grew up in. But if not for the exclusive madness this set would be just another two-pack with some cool additions (like a monkey in every box, for example). Of course Mattel got a DCUC exclusive AND the same set on Matty Collector only for the price of a space chimp. By doing this the blue bastard was turned into a collectors item that scalpers will love to over-price for years and years.

Did you see the first pic? The bag clearly says that is intended for the "adult" collector. Wow, is good to know, since I don't want my Gleek picked up by a 5 year old brat that confused a not very articulated blue monkey in a yellow jumpsuit for something remotely fun to play with.

Yeah, I have this feeling it was the first movie I ever went to see in a cinema (at least if I'm right, it's one of the first I remember). I can't remember how good it was, but it can't be any worse than Life Day.

Also, I love how the hanna Barbara's are in front of your Sealab 2021 DVDs.

Hey guys, A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to find a guy on ebay that had something I wanted (and who shipped to Argentina), thanks to him I finally got the three remaining Wildc.a.t.s. from Playmates I needed.

With Zealot, Helspont and Black Razor now I have the complete set of 13 figures.

I was wondering if I was gonna get a bitter-sweet feeling about finally completing the set. But no, It's just sweet.

I mean, look at them all together:

I have to thank Tyroc that said he was going to look for the missing figures when I posted last time. Just being able to share this with you is help enough... Of course, you can still look for something else in my want list...  ;D

Oddly enough I looked at mine and noticed that it has a "T" crotch and not the"V" one shown on the prototype.  It also came with a small blue cross bow.  I had issues with the right hand staying on it never seem to pop in all the way.

Trying to stop the cat killings, I have some news.

I finally completed the MOTU 200X collection!

With the addition of this two (somewhat superfluous) figures:

Snake Teela (Toyfare exclusive and the only variant I decided to get) and a Bone Warrior, the worst figure ever for an army builder (luckily I'm not) since he came with the Slime Pit Play Set. So, in order to build an actual army of these guys you should be swimming in slime by now.

And finally I got this one too:

The Toyfare exclusive Faker. AKA that toy somebody gave you when you were a kid, and that was the first thing in your life to create an ambiguous feeling (I know, probably not the best way to say it, since I'm talking about He-Man, but bare with me), on one hand he was cool, since he was another toy to play with, on the other had, he was lame, 'cause even when you were a kid you knew he was just He-Man with blue paint. So, for the first time in your life, something was cool and lame at the same time (Coolame?), and things would never be the same.

Just making it an exclusive figure is enough apparently.

Actually, if you think about it for a sec, the colours, the vacant expression, the meaningless in the cartoon...

Yes!

Faker is just a pumped up Gleek.

I finally got the two guys I wanted from History Of The DC Universe line:

For the non posers (or just-stand-up-on-a-shelf-figures guys), this line is good, but if you want to have fun with toys like BigRaj, then you'll have a lot of problems to make them do what you want. Anyway, is good to see my (probably) favorite comic book character in plastic form. Yes, just like for you is Martian Manhunter, or Aquaman, or Firestorm my favorite (even more than Batman) is the yellow freak known as Creeper. Actually my three all time favorites are Batman, Creeper and Atom... What does that say about me? Dark Freak with self esteem issues? I'm sure there's a Facebook test that answers that question.

I also got some golden oldies:

Big Barda and Oberon from Mr. Miracle Set. She might not have knee articulation, but she sure is big. And he sure is small, and ugly. But hey, he's just like in the comics... Right? The small, ugly guy with Mr. Miracle. Or perhpas you remember him better as the ugly, small guy with Maxwell Lord.

In my blog www.freakstudios.blogspot.com (http://www.freakstudios.blogspot.com) I posted more and bigger images.

That Kirby Barda is one of the best female 6" figures ever.

Geez FS you have gone hard this week.We might have to stage an intervention for you. :)

Congrats on your score, great work.I really don't know about the flocking on Creeper at all, wonder how hard it would be to remove?

I think flocking Creeper was a mistake. I know other people like it, but I can't imagine it ageing well.

....and I'd pay to see Freak Studio versus the Nerd Eating Rats  :D

They taste like chicken...  ;D

And talking about the Creeper, I wasn't too keen on the flock either, but it's one way to go, and I like that DCD is taking a couple of chances with this line. Perhaps we'll get a DCUC Creeper in the future and we'll be able to compare, for now it's what we've got.  And for the ageing, I think it depends on the quality of the materials used, some flocked toys of the 80s still look pretty sweet.

Yeah,i kinda though the flocking would be of a good quality and i agree with you that it's good that DCD is trying new things.Guess i'd have to see it in person myself to really see how i feel about it.Could be changed though i reckon if i didn't like it i guess.

In order to change the subject from bunny intercourse to something a little less controversial, I give you two of the weirdest figures in my collection.

The guy that made this He-Man and this Trap-Jaw is from Argentina, and they are not as you might guess (it was my guess too at first) metal plated Mattel action figures. The artist made some molds out of the old toys and did completely articulated figures made from solid metal. How cool is that?

He plans to do more, but the process of making the molds and deciding what alloys to use for each piece, is very slow and demanding, specially considering he's just doing it for the love of He-Man (not literally).

But this is not the weirdest He-Man memorabilia that turned up in Argentina. I don't own this, just read it on a collectors page, but a guy in Argentina, went into an antique shop and found this very cool and very inexplicable bronze Battle Cat:

My guess is that it was a DC fan trying to make a real Bronze Tiger.  ;D

In my blog (www.freakstudios.blogspot.com (http://www.freakstudios.blogspot.com)) more and bigger metal pics.

Lucky for me, I didn't have to pay since the guy lives here. If you guys want one I'll have to look into it, but's probably going to cost an arm and a leg.

And no, an arm and a leg from your custom toys will not work.

After a really long wait (almost two months, I was beginning to think they were not going to show up) I received my Futurama Wave 6 figures. Amy Wong and Leela as Cloberella. She's a variant, and in normal circumstances I wouldn't have bought her, but this allowed me to put together the Robot Santa BAF, having all those pieces, but not being able to build him was making me slightly (oh ever so slightly) mad...

Now I have all Futurama figures (until Wave 7 at least, cross my fingers, 'cause I really want that wave).

Just brilliant!  :D

But no blue Zoidberg?

Have you any idea how much that damn thing costs?!?!?!?!

... No, really... 'Cause I don't know and I want it...  ;D

Anyway, after much expectation and a little scare (when I though this figures were not displayed in SDCC and feared they were turned down by DCD), I finally got JLI wave 2.

I love them all! They are great, and I started reading superhero comics with JLI, before that it was Asterix and Tintin for me. And the first number of the JLI I got was #4, the introduction of Booster Gold against the Royal Flush Gang. I was like 8 or 9 and loved everything about it.

ALso, I got this great figure:

We talked about this, how Andy's cat ate the cross-bow, etc. This Huntress actually scare the shit out of me, 'cause when I opened the blister, the head was loose. But it wasn't broken, the balled neck just popped out, I put it back on and it was perfect.

Oh, Andy, by the way, the Cross-bow is blue.  ;)

Doh. I thought that crossbow was yellow.

Poison Ivy from BTAS came with a yellow cross bow, perhaps thats the one you recall.  DCD Earth 2 Huntress had a blue one and on mine the right hand that held said blue cross bow kept coming off until I glued it in place.

Why would Poison Ivy have a Cross bow, did she ever used one?

In my case what came off was the head... Luckily it wasn't broken. Pehaps she had some QC problems.

Finally got my MOTU Classics Webstor!

I had Webstor when I was a kid, and I really liked him. I used to play a lot with him, except when he was unable to play because I had made a mess with the string of his action feature. I liked that Webstor a lot, but I think this version is superior to that one in every way, I really would have liked to have this Webstor instead of the other.

So, this is my plan. I'm going to start drinking heavily, in order to destroy as much childhood memories as I can, when the other Webstor is deleted, my mind will replace him with this one. Will it work? Tune in next week when I get out of rehab...

While you wait, check more pics and silly jokes in my blog.

Well, it's official... I'm knee deep in... ehm... In Classics.

Last week's haul also included the incredible King Grayskull, from the 2008 SDCC.

If  had any doubts about committing to this line, Webstor took care of those, but if he hadn't, this one really would be the solution. I'm so happy right now!

I finally got my commentary of the four retro ninja turtles I got up on my blog...

I really dig the unique sculpt that was made by Playmates for this line. There was almost no reusing of parts, lots of cool, bizarre details and characters, the figures were incredibly solid and ell made. The only thing that had a problem was the paint, a little too sloppy sometimes. Other than that this is one of the best lines I own.

The rest of my thoughts, here: www.freakstudios.blogspot.com (http://www.freakstudios.blogspot.com)

Futurama wave 7 found his way to my collection and this time the feeling is bitter sweet. I finally completed the Planet Express crew, but for the first time the sculpt was just a little off...

See for yourselves:

Still, I'm glad I have this, specially since I wasn't really expecting them, there's a guy I usually buy toys from, when wave 6 was released I asked him to order it for me, and he forgot, since we have a good relationship I made his life hell until he got them (even now wave 7 of Futurama is "the wave you forgot, you bastard"). But this time he ordered them for me even before I knew wave 7 was out (even before Michael Crawford's review), so I guess he redeem himself a little bit...

That's a great idea, I don't have an account and never used a twitter... But is Paris Hilton can do it, I think I may be able to pull it off.

If One Night in Paris showed anything it's that Paris Hilton can't pull anything off. Or at least she shouldn't be allowed to try to pull something off on camera.

So... You want the Bat-Bot or the Solomon Grundy? Both look great! But I can't get into the 5" line now. Plus not all of the figures are that good.

There's a stretchy Plastic Man too!

Just the Bat-Bot. It's a stand-alone as far as I'm concerned. Other than the soon to be released Firestorm, I have no interest in the line, but this thing is something special.

Another nice tip, they changed Dick Dastardly's name in Wacky Races, they made him a french guy and called him Pierre Nodoyuna, his last name is a play on words: "No doy una" meaning "I can't win" or "I can't catch a brake".

After the perfect set-up in that first line of your last post, I was sorely disappointed by the lack of Phil Collins references. Great review though!

That mouser needs a wash.

Done. Not in time for the pics though, I know it's nowhere near mint but since it was the only working Mouser I was able to find in Argentina, I had to buy it.

Oh, and I got my first DCUC Wave 11 figure:

Yeah, with no add-ons, the buck is really exposed for what it is. I'm actually using it for a custom, and headless with an undercoat, it's even sillier next to the male bucks.

It could be worse, it could be the nigh anorexic ML Shadowcat. That thing is almost impossible to balance without a lot of effort, and really has the skinniest limbs I've seen (as in 3.75" figs are probably competing with her arms).

Love your articles FS,always a good giggle. You make some great points about DCD Bucks and i hafta admit that the McGuiness Figs, although i like your caricature comment, just don't do it for me.Just too"lumpy"for my liking.
I have the FA Cassie Cain Batgirl and the Bodysculpt is great but the Head is massive so my default Cassie is the DCSH one with some minor touch-ups.

Yeah, this are so cool I want every character in the DCU in this style. I even think we have a fair shot at Kamandi (he was in the series two times already...) But most of all I really want a Booster gold now! Batman, Blue Beetle, Booster, Guy... We would be so close to an Action Legue JLI...

Another thing... I got a free toy a couple of days ago, a present from a friend.

Well this is where the confusion sets in. Do zombies unlive forever? Or will their flesh decay and rot like any other corpse?

It's like my other incredibly important unanswered question that no one can answer...."If I'm bitten by a zombie, I'll turn into a zombie. But if a zombie is eating me, at what point will it stop eating me? Is there a point where I 'turn' and it stops? Zombies don't eat other zombies"

My take on it is that the zombies will eventually rot and decay. Meaning that if you can last for say 30 odd years after zombocalypse, you're probably going to be safe (at least from the zeds). You're other question is a very good one. I think it comes down to three of things. One is whether zombies get full, the second how fast a zombie eats, and the third how fast you turn. Given turning normally takes a day or so, I'd think that if a zombie didn't get full then a 12 hour dining period would see you consumed, and you probably wouldn't have turned by then.

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on June 14, 2010, 01:03:25 am
Also it depends if zombies are created by a disease or by magic. Magic zombies will remain non living even if they are skeletons. Contaminated zombies will stop existing after their bodies rot.

And for the second question, I believe Doctor Westy gave a very good answer. You also need to take the disease/magic into consideration. Zombie diseases often attack the brain ad cause the transformation, if that's the first thing a zombie attacks you won't turn. Only if you were bitten and managed to escape you'll turn.

Back to the zombie thing, as they need to eat I guess they eventually starve to death if they don't get food. Pretty sure that's what happened to the zombies in the 28 Days Later film and elsewhere.

Pretty sure it was MAx Brooks theory in the Zombie Survival Guide as well. The other alternative is that they have no digestive system (ala Marvel Zombies 1), and that stuff just builds up in them until the asplode.

Actually that's not the case. George Romero stated that eating is one of the few remaining drives they have left. There's a scene in (I think) 'Day of the Dead' where a zombie who has had his stomach and most of his organs removed still tries to bite and eat the Doctor.

The '28 Days later' zombie is not technically a zombie in the Romero and Fulci sense. They're just angry people with a bad infection.

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on June 18, 2010, 12:19:15 am
Besides, if the stomach of a zombie explodes, he's not going to die because of it. If a zombie that's just a moving torso wants to eat you brain, then a guy with no stomach can just see the food pass right through him, and then eat again.

Oh, and also...

well... bout zombies, i think that Resident Evil/Biohazard saga adds another elements to the zombies matter... they r a product of genetic engineering, i mean from a virus (T) & that virus transfroms ppl into undead, but can also transform a human (i’m not pretty sure if an undead can b re-transformed...) into a mutant monstrosity that preserve its intellectual abilities & they dun need to eat or something like that to survive... huh! i remembered that in RE-Extinction the Umbrella scientists used T virus to give back certain intellectual faculties in some undeads & it works, at least for a while... then eat & destroy, yeah !!! LOL

Oooooooh, very jealous. I've always wanted that Sunspot.  >:(

I used to have the Banshee and Nightcrawler from that line but sold them in a fit of silliness once, something about trying to cut down what I collect or some other such bullshit.

Pretty sure my brother had that Gambit, and some other Nightcrawler without a light up sword. He also had Forge. I had Wolvie (blue and yellows, and the yellow and orange), MAgneto, and Sabertooth (the old sabes outfit).

Also wasn't Random actually made a member of X-Factor at some point? I seem to recall it was just after the death of "Madrox" due to the Legacy Virus. I can't recall that well, cos that was about the point in the mid 90's where I stepped off.

He was created by Peter David during his 1st run on X-Factor and was an on again off again ally/enemy. I think he was most recently a member of the Acolytes led by Exodus.

I have often wondered if John Byrne looks back and regrets killing off Guardian in issue #12. I know it was mean to be shocking and show anyone could die, etc etc, but I wonder if the mythos of Alpha Flight would have been better strengthened by keeping a Captain America-style hero at the heart of the team.

Just something I ponder on.

Yeah, unfortunately it was a downhill run to a slow death. The less said about "Omega Flight" the better.

As a storyline after a good 75 or even 50 issues, maybe, but as it was the team and book just wasn't established enough, and it never quite recovered. Shame too, because that initial year was brilliant stuff. Alpha Flight was the shit back then.

Not with Lego, but she'll get distracted with some computer parts to tinker with or maybe some manga. You didn't think I was gonna marry a non-nerd-girl, did you?  :D

You guys get out of it cheap. For me it usually involves gems and gold content.

Sometimes I get toys and I don't really know why. I mean, I know I like 'em, but that's about it. All I know is that every time I have a bad day and I see this thing:

Title: Re: My freaky collection
Post by: Freak Studio on August 24, 2011, 08:25:00 am
yeah, this are not the best pictures, sorry about that... The glossy finish in the figure made it really hard to photograph, without the flash the pics came out super blurry, and with the flash they were not very clear.

But is a cool hand-casted and hand-painted figure. FMS can tell you that.

As for the TV series, that's part of what I do for a living :D.

Hey guys, it's time for your psycho kids favorite show: Argentinean Bootleg Toys in Bodybags!

Today I found this awesome monstruosity:

That is an original 80s ET knock off, still in his original bag with rusting staples and everything! Are you scared yet?

This is what the card says!

El ETE (literally "The ET" as phonetically pronounced in Spanish E. Tee)
Amigo de todos los niños (Friend of all the children).

Weird? You betcha.

I used to have a heap of those as a kid.
My brother and I would have "battles", we would get two plastic cups of the same size and put a 30cm ruler in between as a sort of bridge. Then we would hit the table and whose ever little guy fell first was the loser.

100 of them are different and still I need 136 to complete the collection... I have some doubles if you want them, Ben.  ;)

I used to have a heap of those as a kid.
My brother and I would have "battles", we would get two plastic cups of the same size and put a 30cm ruler in between as a sort of bridge. Then we would hit the table and whose ever little guy fell first was the loser.

Sounds great, I have to try that!

Oh, my god! I used to love these when I was a kid!

Did they come back or are these all vintage figures that you're hunting down?

Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

Bats is my favourite so far. That blue really pops, and the cape is awesome.

Brilliant!  :D

Is Guy's hair sculpted or is it just painted to look that way?

Sculptes, and so is his collar, and MM's too. His cape and collar are separate pieces so he can actually move his head.

Bats' cape is incredible. This guy is so talented, he's already working on the next wave of characters, two girls and a guy, can you guess who?

Norm Breyfogle came to Argentina a couple of week ago. I know maybe he's not be as important to you, but here he was the artist of the run that was published locally and got most of my friends and me hooked.

I was able to buy this from him.

And I got a Blue & Gold comission from Yanick Paquette to add to the collection.

Yeah, I also spoke with Peter Milligan (he signed Skreemer for me). Norm had a pretty rough time with the currency exchange in Argentina, apparently nobody told him to ask to be paid in dollars and exchange places, here or in the States, don't change Argentinean currency.

Luckily, there was a viral campaign on scoial networks so some of the people who got stuff from him is paying though Paypal to minimize his loss.  :P
