Title: Bowen Mini-Busts
Post by: Titansfan on March 27, 2014, 06:23:44 am
Bought my first Marvel mini-bust yesterday.  Got the Giant Man bust with little wasp on his shoulder.  Gonna stick with Avengers.  Got a question.  How deep into the Avengers do the mini-busts go?  Do characters like Swordsman or Captain Marvel II have a bust?  Is there a website with a checklist anywhere?

The Bowen Designs website has a full rundown of past pieces:

http://bowendesigns.com/category/marvel_products.aspx

It goes very deep - no Swordsman or Monica yet, but there is Stingray, Crystal, Hellcat etc etc

Welcome to the slippery slope!!

I have Power Man and Namor.....because they were cheap. I'm not buying another one....ever.....because then I'll want them all.

Thanks for the link.   How often do they release new busts?

Whenever they can work the little hook-thingies in the back.  [naughty]

 [rimshot]

 :D

Nice one.

To answer, it does vary a bit. Not only does it depend on where Bowen is in terms of Phase/Contract, but the actual production schedule can be a bit iffy.

Oddly, the one I want the most is the Devil Dinosaur bust... That can't be that expensive on ebay, right?  ::)

My Giant Man bust came today.  Super impressed.  Got my eye on my next one.  Can't believe how cheap some of these are on ebay. So Scotty which one is your favorite?

I gave a good home to one of Scotty's unwanted Bowen's. I sometimes think about others.

I love all things Bowen - as far as busts go, faves include:

Wonder Man (Safari Jacket version)
Daimon Hellstrom
Blob
Pyro
Tiger Shark
Hydro Man
Watcher

No. Before the Marvel thing got underway, he was doing stuff for DC and Dark Horse amongst others. Remember Seinfeld's Superman statue? He's done stuff like Hellboy and Grendel too.

Oh wow I never knew thr superman statue from Seinfeld was by him.  Very fun fact.

Oh wow I never knew thr superman statue from Seinfeld was by him.  Very fun fact.

He managed a couple before moving on. There's also the Batman on gargoyle statue.

There's also other Bowen stuff out there too, such as the Wolverine on Sentinel statue that was released By (from memory "Creative" or "Moore") and was sculpted by Bowen before he started his own company.

Check out ep 50 of the AFB Podcast for our interview with Randy. It's fun stuff until he and Scotty gang up on me regarding Shang-Chi.

The collection is now up to 5.  Been getting good deals on what I've gotten so far.  Combined shipping really helps.  Now I have Giant Man, Wasp (retro costume), U.S.Agent, Namor and Angel.

Was anything new shown at sdcc?   Seems like I started collecting and the line has died.

Bowen doesn't do SDCC or Toyfair.

At any rate, there's no new product currently as they are in negotiations with Marvel for their license renewal. There are often gaps in their "phases" - but this one seems rather protracted.

If I had a boatload of cash (like some English/Australian collectors/podcasters) have, I would buy the Hell out of this line. To date, I just have two busts -- Havok and Polaris. Then again, I'd need to either get a bigger storage bin -- or more likely, a showroom.

I don't recall the gap between contacts ever being so long. It's scary, because Bowen is one of the few places where you can expect to get the classic version of a character -- even though they do new versions as well. But you're never gonna see some johnny or jane come lately like Hope Summers from Bowen. They have more sense than that.

If I ever go down that (dark and lonely) road, it will be for Neal Adams era X-Men -- including Havok and Lorna, naturally. I could probably live without Prof. X, though.

If the contract is renewed, would be nice to see full-size versions of the Hellstrom siblings (you know -- Son of 'some dude claiming to be the Fallen Angel, but he's really just some schmuck demon on an ego trip).

I don't like Bowen's Prof. X bust. I went with the Diamond Select version for my collection. It features Xavier wearing his Cerebro helmet and some "mental effects". Not too expensive, either.

did you really believe I was gonna be able to stick with just the Avengers.  Five more and this subset is done.  Scott is already on the way.

Very nice!

I always liked that Polaris & Sunfire, though I have neither.

My Bowen collection is eclectic, a few that I really wanted like Black Knight & Captain Britain. Firestar, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, some Iron Man, and a few good deals like Hellcat and Satana.

I have a lot more DC mb's, and some others, but I'm more of a Statue person, with at least 150 of those.

Meanwhile, the new Bowen contract is taking a very long time, but that seems it's because it's now Disney.

Someone needs a collection thread  [westy]

Thanks, but it's all in a storage unit that I can barely open, along with tens of thousands of comics and gn's, thousands of DVD's, a couple hundred action figures, some books and a few other odds and ends.

In other words, someone really needs display room, and until that happens then a collection thread would just be sad.  Thanks for the interest though, and if it ever looks presentable then I will look into that.

I'm really digging these busts and have decided to add a limited number of villains to my want list.  I want to keep it narrowed to arch villians of the major heroes and teams.  Like when I think Spider-Man I also think Green Goblin.  Same for Cap and Red Skull, theFfAnd Dr Doom ect.  But what about Hulk?  Is it the Leader or Abomination?  Is Daredevil's #1 badguy Kingpin or bullseye?  And how about Dr. Strange?  I need input from the lifelong marvel guys.

The Leader
Kingpin
Dormammu

Thor is where you'd be in trouble. Obviously Loki is the choice, but Bowen has done some amazing Thor villains from Ulik to Surtur that would look great on the shelf.

I have Havok and Lorna (Polaris before she had a codename), but I don't like that the other Adams era X0Men don't have a full torso. Sunfire really shines (literally) as a bust. That costume would make such a great figure. We need a Polaris, Thunderbird, FA Sunfire set -- stat!

Let's just for speculation assume that Marvel and Bowen are going to part ways.  Would you rather see him focus on one particular set of characters at another company or just be totally freelance.  Personally I'd kill for a classic DC Bowen line, but can't see the current assholes in charge going for it.

I'd only want to see a DC line if it had the depth of the Marvel line -- and if Randy was able to make the versions he wanted -- and not what Geoffy wanted.

But I really don't have a horse in this race, so...

Display is looking great!  I don't know if you're aware, but Bowen actually sells some stuff directly, often at very good deals (probably to help pay the bills while the contract negotiations continue).

Here's the link, but once you look then you'll probably be spending some $$$ there:  https://www.rockysvault.com/shop/

Let's just for speculation assume that Marvel and Bowen are going to part ways.

I really can't do that.  I was buying Bowen when he was making DC the first time, and as soon as he went to Marvel then I made a wish list and many of the key characters are unmade, but promised for the next Phase.  In other words, as long as the next phase goes through then I'll finally get so much that I've been waiting so soo long for.  At least 2 of those that have been top 3 on my wish list since Day 1.  I'm primarily a statue collector, and that Bowen and Marvel would spilt instead of finally making these is just too terrible to contemplate.

Always Optimistic what are some of the rumored pieces for the next phase?  Really hoping for some more classic Avengers in the bust line, like Captain Marvel II, and Swordsman.

Well, assuming there aren't a change of plans, and that Marvel/Disney doesn't veto anything (which they've apparently done before) then we still hadn't heard as much about busts.  I'm sure that he'll continue to make some, but much of the discussion is usually on the full size statues.  And it actually sounds very likely that he'll try to make both of those as statues (Captain Marvel II/Photon has an especially vocal fanbase).  Other absent Avengers like Wonder Man & Mockingbird are slated too, along with some more Thor pieces and filling in X-Men, such as Rachel Summers, Shadowcat, probably another Nightcrawler, Jubilee, Spiral, etc.

Busts had been a lower priority last phase, though a lot of that Randy attributed to the cost of materials and how they have evolved to be more elaborate, with arms, more of the body, etc.  That resulted in their being a higher msrp and I think at least some buyers transitioned to full-size statues.  Now that oil has gone down, maybe there'll be more in the next phase?

I'm jealous of the AF though.  That's a team that I don't think will ever make it to FS, and I've always wanted to get around to them, but never have.  Definitely hope that you post a pic or two once you get them finished!
