Title: Favorite Mailaways!
Post by: B-Lister on September 23, 2014, 09:19:31 pm
Okay, we all like getting free stuff in the mail, so tell me, what are your favorite mailaway figures?

Star Wars was famous for its 'White Box Mailaways' they even do them to this day (the vintage style Rocketfett being an amazingly successful one!)

I was way too young to get any of the vintage Mailaways. Still always looking for a Super Powers Clark Kent.

Some favorites in my personal collection are the "He-Man.org 500" Keldors (Same figure as the SDCC one, but in a white outer box, as opposed to the SDCC four color box.)

The Crystal Skeleton of Akator from Indiana Jones.

Uruk-Hai and Lurtz from the Burger King mailaway.
I had enough POP for two Uruks but they ran out, and substituted Lurtz, a common figure, but hard to find with the mailer. The Uruk went up in value, Lurtz has kinda plateaued.

200X Faker and Moss Man. One was a Toyfare exclusive, the other was an in store promo. Together with Keldor, they're the trinity of 200X figures. Yeah, they did a shitty Teela and She-Ra, but both were half assed.

The early POTF2 mailaways (Hantrooper, Ghost of Obi Wan, Cantina Band Member, Oola, Muftak &Kabe, B'omarr Monk, and Mace Windu) I have 'em all except Muftak & Kabe, and Oola. Haven't kept up with the Star Wars exclusives, but they keep doing good ones. At this point, if I were going to continue collecting Star Wars, it would only be Vintage and POTF2.

So, which ones did you have? Which were your favorites?, and which ones do you still seek?

I'd love an original mailaway Boba Fett, with box, bag, and all paperwork, and Clark Kent in the same condition.

I also want the modern Vintage Style Rocket Fett.

I also have Belloq in ceremonial robe, and Bossk.

Both were offered as mailaways and carded. Belloq is more commonly found in the mailer, while Bossk is more commonly found carded.

Since I don't have mailers for either, I cannot say if they were mailaways.

A few ARAH favorites were The Fridge, and Hooded Cobra Commander.

The original Boba Fett was a magical figure. I still remember receiving it, opening it, being in awe of it.

Toy Fare exclusives were a lot of fun too. I ended up with 17 Multiple Mans. When I ordered Guardian it never arrived so I called in and was offered not just Guardian but also Vindicator which had the reversed colors and was very limited.

Toy Fare exclusives were neat. I got a few, I remember Eradicator. I still have him, actually.

The thing that really upset me about those, is how he sleazily funneled them through his brother's store Toy Wiz. They pull shifty shit to this day. I checked the site the other day for ReAction, and he's got 'em all priced according to 'rarity'.

That toy scalper shit ended last decade. Get with the times.

They were the ones who were doing the graded exclusives too. The figure would sell out, but they were sitting on piles of AFA graded ones, ready to gouge you for an extra hundo. Really turned me off of the AFA thing (that and the proof that they graded recards and bootlegs), as well as Wizard as a whole.

I like my mailaways simple. White box, with a baggie containing the figure. The more recent endeavors by Hasbro (boxes within boxes, or trays, or even full on regular packaging) just don't have that feel of authenticity.

Like I said, I got into Star Wars late. I was still young when POTF were being blown out. I did buy a few MOC. The B-Wing pilot, and the Rancor Keeper.

The B-Wing Pilot was a POTF figure, I know this, because I found the coin when we dismantled the old couch We had throughout my youth.

Anyway, most of the SW figures I owned were acquired through yard sales, and flea markets.

I do remember once being in an outlet store and seeing a floor to ceiling display of Jabba the Hutt playsets in the White Sears lineart boxes for five freakin' bucks a pop. Saw an AT-AT  and Rancor on deep clearance at Children's Palace too. I eventually got a Rancor, but never did get an AT-AT.

Anyway, back on point, I would've been right at the age for the Anakin promo, but the figures were all ones I had, or ones I didn't like, so no go.

I was the perfect age for Clark Kent though. Too bad I didn't love superheroes back then.

Super Powers Clark Kent for the win with The Emperor second!  [bravo]

My favorite (and first) was the Han Solo in Stormtooper disguise from Froot Loops.  I hated that he didnt have a blaster, but it was just so damn cool.

Then my dog got a hold of it and chewed it up not more than one day after the promotion ended.  That was when the figure couldnt be easily bought for cheap and I didnt get a new one until just last year.

That's a pisser, it's a fun figure. Glad you replaced him, apparently there were a lot of leftovers that eventually made it onto the market.

The Lay's Obi Wan was much more well known.

My love of the Hooded Cobra Commander is well documented.

However, Star Wars Survival Kit was more well used over time. (Yoda pack!)

The Yoda pack is cool. I had the hoth packs and others, but never had the Yoda pack.

That's how my Belloq is. No staff, no chest plate

I lucked into the accessories for Belloq.

I picked up Indy, German Mechanic, and Belloq in a second hand shop for two bucks apiece. Belloq had the robe, but fuck all else.

I was at a toy show and a guy had the breastplate and staff for $3. Now I just need the box and baggie.

And the accessories for Indy and the Mechanic.

yup. have that mace windu.

Title: Re: Favorite Mailaways!
Post by: B-Lister on September 24, 2014, 07:59:35 pm
As do I. Still the best Mace Windu in 3.75" scale.

One thing that kind of upset me was during the vintage era, a sneak preview figure eventually made it into the main line. With Episode 1, that didn't happen. At least with Mace. Sure, we got an E1 Mace in the first assortments, but it was a different sculpt, and nowhere near as good.

I kept all the cards from my Star Wars figures as I used them to track which figures I had and what I still needed, etc.
When the Survival pack came up I went nuts, I had so mnay prrofs-of0purchase I ended up getting 5 of them. Sure I didn't need 5 Yoda back packs, but it meant that every figure on the Falcon who needed a gas mask could have one and those grappling hook belts were a hoot. Still have them all to this day.

One thing about Star Wars that always got me was how nobody had a space suit. It's plausible that Vader and troopers could survive, I suppose, but if a pebble hit the X-Wing canopy, they were hosed.

Good point. I always wondered if the Battlestar Galactica ones had some kind of visor that would come down if they needed it?

There is a point in Empire where a pilot is seen being hurled from his TIE fighter. He doesn't explode, so I'm assuming the Empire valued human life a bit more than the Alliance.

But then, how are you gonna find a helmet big enough to fit over the meat folds of the face of that Alien who looks like Raul Julia, that Lando chose to be his Chewbacca during the Death Star run?

Cripes no! I didn't save anything but the backer cards for the figures. I did get a small fishing tackle box when I was a kid and kept all their weapons in it which I still have.

I still remember the NN showing up in the mail. The mail was officially the coolest thing ever. You sat around and a guy brought you toys. Hooray!

I remember reading somewhere before it came out that the Spirit Obi-Wan was going to be offered via Pepsi through Pizza Hut and actually calling every Pizza Hut around me trying to find one.  I confused the hell out of a lot of people.

Title: Re: Favorite Mailaways!
Post by: B-Lister on September 25, 2014, 02:05:29 pm
Might have just been some confusion along the way. Since the Internet was fairly new then, we still relied a lot on word of mouth.

Since Frito Lay and Pepsi owned Pizza Hut at the time, and since Lay's was marketing a pizza flavored chip along with this promo, maybe some information got jumbled, resulting in your confusing calls to the local pizza places.

Pizza Hut always seemed magical to me. I loved the dim lighting, and my local one still had a functional cocktail table cabinet combo featuring Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man. It was there all throughout college. I haven't been to a Pizza Hut in over a decade, so I dunno if it's still there.

Pizza Hut was amazing as a kid.  Now, not so much.  But I remember getting a free personal pan pizza after reading books as part of the Book-It program back in elementary school.  Good times.

And no idea how I forgot about the Mace Windu, but agreed that it's my favorite version of the character to date.  At the time I thought it had the best headsculpt of any human Star Wars character.

Book-It happened for me at the time Pizza Hut had their X-Men promo.

best mail away I got hands down was the joe Colton figure(s).i had accombulated so many flag points at the tail end of GI joe I was able to get about six figures all with different hair colors, red, brown and blonde,I gave an extra each to my brother, best friend and cousin.i also liked the steppanwulf mail away and the floppy record it came with.emperorvwas another favorite,as I wrote Kenner a fan letter right after seeing ROTJ asking about a emperor figure they wrote me back saying it was a great idea,(making my 11 year old self feel like I came up with it)that he would be available soon.

I think there's atmosphere in space in Star Wars, hence the explosions. I think the correct answer to the question is somewhere between "It's an homage to the Flash Gordon serial nature of the thing, as those were done before anyone really understood outer space as we do now" and "Who gives a fuck, just enjoy it."

Anyway, as a result of this thread:

* I had the excitement of once again considering the amazing place that "Young America, Minnesota" must be, where millions and millions of kids send proofs of purchases to get free shit.

* Found out about the Star Wars survival kit. Somehow, I never knew about this. At the time, my mom, who was always big on sending off to get free shit, must have just considered this a big time choking hazard and skipped it. I just went to ebay and bought a set for 20 bucks. Can't wait to kick my vintage Dagobah display up a notch with Yoda on Luke's back.

* Recalled Book-It! I didn't get to Pizza Hut real often, we always got the cheapest pizza possible from Little Caesar's as a family function. Pizza Hut was strictly a thing I would do with friend's families or when my mom would lie to the school system that I read another hundred books so I could scam a free dinner. Louisville right now has a pizza place about every other block, but the first one that gets a table top Miss Pac-Man is the one I'll go to on purpose.

So job well done, guys!

I got into buying figures as a post adolescent late teens type person as a result of that Froot Loops Hantrooper. After that, I had to get some POTF2 stuff, and that just kicked the door wide open.

As a kid I got my Emperor, my Admiral Ackbar, and the one I was most psyched about, Super Powers Steppenwolf. Now THAT was a bad motherfucker. I'm not the first to observe that DC has some somewhat pussy-ass villains, so when this axe wielding dude with the biker mustache and spikes shows up all red and black and shit, the heroes went through some changes. Wish I still had the book and record, real bad.

I was more than a bit bummed that he went to retail but Clark Kent did not, which meant I didn't get a Clark Kent until just a few years ago, because I didn't have the proof of purchase pocket.

GI Joe Flag Points were a big deal, because I was late to the party. I missed pre-'87 shit at retail entirely, so stuff like scoring a HISS from that comic book ad was huge. Don't know why I skipped Major Bludd, probably a Sophie's Choice monetary deal my mom put down on the shipping, not realizing I'd still give a fuck at 35. I had the Defiant, so I had one single piece of cardboard worth ONE MOTHERFUCKING HUNDRED POINTS, but never used it because nothing cost near that much, and I knew I wouldn't get anything back. They weren't going to send me like 92 individual points.

When Wal-Mart had the Early Bird repro when ROTS came out, I got really into that entire adventure. Gladly paid and waited, keep the box close to my hand.

Kool-Aid points were a big thing when I was a kid, I looked forward to getting those little catalog sheets detailing all the new trinkets every Summer. My mom habitually kept tearing them off and putting them in a bowl well into my adulthood, and I have a pile of them here. I sometimes look at them and get teary eyed for reasons I can't fully explain.

Title: Re: Favorite Mailaways!
Post by: fishmilkshake on September 28, 2014, 05:30:36 pm
That's awesome Rocko.

Kook-Aid is something I'll never associate with because I just never saw it as a kid here in Oz.

My mother used to keep the labels from boxes of Lipton tea. My parents drank a lot of tea. Everyone drank a lot of tea. We had drawers full of those labels. I got some good stuff from that as my mother would cash them in for sports equipment, etc. I'm sure I even once got the 12" Steve Austin thanks to all the tea my family drank.

Rocko, you could order multiple items with that many flag points. I remember getting a Sky Hawk, and a hooded cobra commander in the same order my older brother got a MANTA, and a second Cobra Commander, and my younger brother got a friggin' Wolverine. We waited with eager anticipation until a friggin' huge parcel came from Hasbro and we divvied up the goods. They always came with bonus flag point vouchers, and a bevvy of new offers.

Title: Re: Favorite Mailaways!
Post by: RockoJerome on September 28, 2014, 08:28:02 pm
Like a true American, I never developed a taste for tea, but grew up swigging sugar water Kool-Aid.

I don't recall how many Flag Points were common trade, but I feel like a full 100 was a crazy high number. I know I got more than a few things with them, but don't recall exactly what. Super Trooper was one, I remember that pretty clearly.

That was a great thing, I really wish someone would bring back the concept. remember Star Wars figures with "Jedi Points," and then nothing came of it? Wonder what that was about.

Prior to the introduction of instant coffee in the US in the late 50s (I think? ) the USA consumed more tea per person than any other country on earth.

I have one of these. He's looking on and smiling benevolently at Han, who is gleefully blowing away a Greedo...who is unarmed. All figures are absolutely vintage. Get the gist?

I only got him fairly recently. As Star Wars figures fell out of favor, it was assumed that i lost interest, though I had not. I still remember coming upon a bunch of the post movie offerings like Luke as a trooper and the skiff boat at a Kay Bee, after they quit being a going concern at K-Mart. My mom said "You're not into Star Wars anymore."

But I was...it's just that everyone else who decided for me.

I'm amazed at how quickly some of this stuff gained in value. Back when I was rabidly scouring the pages of Toy Shop for my next deal, I remember seeing piles of Belloq for $8 each, or Han in trenchcoat 4 for $20 (I think Lee's still offers him as a subscription perk!) I remember you could get a case of Mumm-Ras for $50!

We never really had mail aways in this part of the world I remember at the time I wrote to Kellogs about the storm trooper Han but they couldn't do anything for me. The first one I got (from a comic shop at a much marked up price) was the toyfare shadowcat one. I needed her for my somewhat piss poor excalibur display of Shadowcat Nightcrawler and Kylun (Captain Britain eventually got done at the end of the 5" days)

Title: Re: Favorite Mailaways!

It was a matter of focus. The Duke hate came from the fact that Duke was the focus character for the cartoon, whereas he was a secondary character in the comics.

Add to that, Hasbro's lack of balls when it came to the matter of his death in the Movie.

For my Money, Duke was always a more relatable character than Snake Eyes, who is mute. Sure, Snake Eyes was the mysterious loner, but I just liked other characters better.

As I got older, I learned what a badass Stalker was.

Duke's cool, man. Never understood all the hate.

It is the big cheesy grin.

I think Duke is pretty much the quintessential Joe. One of the best filecards in the series. Who can't respect a guy who passes up promotions?

I think if Flint hadn't been introduced as a such a badass, Duke would have fared better.

Finally added Anakin Skywalker to my collection. When I told my older brother, he recalled a story from when I was a young teen:

We came upon a seller at a huge flea market near Pittsburgh. Guy had a case of vintage figures but thought Obi Wan was Anakin. I could've had the good figure for cheap and left him with a common one, but my conscience got the better of me, and I decided not to rip him off.

Now I have the figure. In this case, the figures were pre priced, I didn't haggle because I already got a good deal.
