I really tried not to spazz out about it, but I failed miserably.

Is that Bruce in the Hulkbuster armor?

Also: I got wood.

I know I should be geeking out about a lot of stuff, but I just think Mantis waving at the end was pure awesome!!  :D

People keep saying "Cap is back". Did he go somewhere? Wasn't he talking to Black Panther at the end of Civil War? Has he been chillin' since then while the other Avengers get on with things?

Black Widow's blonde hair  [sick]

Proxima Midnight  [thumbs up]

War Machine is back?  ???

It's official. I'm old. Just didn't get anything out of it. It looked okay. At first glance, I though Thanos was Terrax the Tamer. Why did they lose  Thano's headgear from his first appearance.

Point!

But yeah, in the comics the only time he ever really went casual was when he retired to become a farmer - so it's a bit jarring.

It's OK, KC.  Personally, I'd be fine if the MCU simply ended after AVENGERS 4.  That would be a great place to let it rest.  But that's not gonna happen.  Disney will be milking MARVEL Super Heroes long after my dead bones have turned to dust.

He also had his civilian-clothing (?) phase back during Annihilation.

He might be responsible for making the cosmic wife beater fashionable.

Why did they lose  Thano's headgear from his first appearance.

Because it looks silly you silly. Like, out of a comic book. Hollywood takes the silly and makes it "better".

I had totally blanked that.  Actually, looking up the pictures I don't even remember the outfit.  Getting old's a bitch.

I'm an old school Avengers fan -- from the Bronze Age, but loved the Silver Age stuff as well from when Big John Buscema was artist. I think I miss the small scale aspect -- the soap opera. The world saving/event stuff all seems the same after a while. I don't need to see another Avengers film where there is a huge swarm of villains taking on the heroes. It's been done -- to death!

Maybe that's why I liked Ant-Man so much!

Post by: Non-Chick Magnet on December 04, 2017, 01:43:52 pm
We're kindred spirits, KC.  I've always preferred more small scale stuff, too.  I understand exactly what you mean.

I totally get that movies are big, expensive spectacles, and the stakes need to be huge, but I just don't think we always need another life form that either wants to take over Earth, or destroy it.  I mean, how many Civilians probably think that JUSTICE LEAGUE just basically copied The first AVENGERS??

Title: Re: Avengers: Infinity War
Post by: Chooch on December 04, 2017, 03:45:40 pm
I'd contend that Avengers or Justice League require a big-league threat for a movie.  By definition they joined together to face the threats they couldn't face alone.  Solo movies should be smaller in scale though to keep the big ones special.  KC's right that Ant-Man was great precisely because a city didn't have to blow up.

CHOOCH, you said it much better than I.  The battle atop the Thomas The Train set was genius.  Especially when the camera pulls back, just as you had forgotten it was merely a toy!

I don't need huge spectacles either.

My favourite bits are the ones where you feel like the comic has come to life. When the filmmakers get it.
Like at the beginning of Civil War when Cap goes through the window and hurls his shield with precision and it bounces off baddies and the walls and he catches it like it's no big deal. It feels so right.

Makes sense to me, FISH.   [rock]

I had an orgasm when ANT MAN shrunk down and took a ride on one of HAWKEYE's arrows.

Yup!

The definitive Marvel comic moment on film is still Spidey fighting Sandman in the back of the armoured car. It felt like it jumped right out of a 70s comic.

a black female actress just signed unto the captain marvel film, as Monica Rambeau perhaps?

Title: Re: Avengers: Infinity War **SPOILERS**

Well that was something.

It really concerns me the number of people going on about the "deaths" in the film. As if they are somehow permanent. People are weird.

The only thing I didn't like about this is the foreshadowing of characters fates based on the actors not wanting to renew their contracts.

Title: Re: Avengers: Infinity War **SPOILERS**
Post by: Chooch on April 29, 2018, 06:36:34 pm
Actually the "deaths" were all the folks that still have a future in the MCU.  They pretty much just left the originals for Avengers 4.  A friend pointed that out to me.  It makes sense, it'll be their swan song so give them a whole movie.  I do wonder if the folks that died pre-snapping will stay dead though.  Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston certainly have potential to break out away from the MCU.

The theory that Clint goes off the deep end because his family is killed (like in the Ultimates) is now way more plausible.  He sees them vanish in dust and goes nuts.

I liked it (once again) more the second time I saw it.  The first time through it didn't feel quite as cohesive, but I think that was a lot of me trying to keep up.

Good points Chooch.

I'm curious how they can do the whole Bucky/Falcon as Cap when that removes either Bucky or Cap from future films.
Same goes for War Machine as Iron Man. Rhodey kicked some ass in the Wakandan battle.

Given how woefully underpowered the supposedly technology superior Wakandan people are when being invaded by aliens, I'm not sure why they chose to leave the Hulk out? he could have been the force that kept their heads above water until Thor arrived (and boy did he!! Woohoo!)

What a spectacle. Really, really loved it. My 17 y.o. was very put out by all the deaths. I tried to explain that in comics this kinda stuff happens all the time and they come back, but she is still sour. ;)

Standout performances for me were Zoe Saldana, Tom Holland, and, unexpectedly, Josh Brolin.

And I may very well have to break my no movie figures rule for a SH Figuarts Iron Spidey.

Loved it!

Absolutely loved it!  Definitely the big screen version I've wanted since Thanos was brought back in 1990.  Very cool to see a couple of panels basically come to life during the big fight, even though it happened to different characters (Drax turned into blocks and Mantis becoming all rubbery), and another brutal death for Vision.  Loved all the ego clashing (Starlord/Thor, Starlord/Tony, Tony/Strange), and was surprised to enjoy Hulk being scared to face Thanos again.

Any theories on HULK other than "I just got my ass handed to me and I'm scared"?  I mean....Hulk wasn't even afraid of Surtur.

Mrs MAGNET thinks Banner is still very messed up from being HULK for 2 full years, as was stated in Ragnarok.

Nah, I think Hulk's just scared because he's never had his ass handed to him before.

"Sweet Rabbit" was one of my favourite moments in the film.

I'm assuming that since banner survived the "ending" that Hulk will make good in the next film. I'm not sure where Ruffalo sits in terms of wanting to continue as Banner. It's unlikely that Evans or Downey Jr. will continue in their roles. Hemsworth was also due to finish, but I suspect that Thor 3 has shown him where the character is capable of going (and the hefty paycheck that might come with a subsequent movie, etc)

A friend of mine and I have been discussing what may happen with this franchise after Avengers 4.  Do they just add new, different Avengers?  Do they split off into an Alternate Universe?  Do they say the heck with the Avengers and go in another direction, maybe New Warriors, The ( real ) Defenders??

Simply recasting seems kind of weird now, so what happens?

Title: Re: Avengers: Infinity War **SPOILERS**

I doubt a full reboot would be in the works, so we gotta say goodbye to quite a few of the original Avengers while adding new characters.  My hope is that all the newly re-acquired licenses from Fox will start to be added to the MCU proper in a few years.  Galactus could be your large, looming threat for several movies.  The Guardians could have run-ins with a couple of Heralds.  Maybe even have the group failing to stop the big G from devouring a planet to show how futile a fight against him is, then finding out from Dr. Strange at the end of a flick that a certain silver Herald is currently on Earth.  Meanwhile Magneto is pitted against a small group of mutants and an Avenger or two, which builds towards the after-Galactus phase.  Dr. Strange might be a great way to bring the FF and Doom into the MCU, with Strange exploring weird dimensions (trying to find a way to combat Galactus) and finding Reed staring back at him from the other side of a portal thanks to his advanced tech.

I also wondered if they may head in a different direction.  Maybe focus more on solo movies and single characters.

Title: Re: Avengers: Infinity War **SPOILERS**

Most of the other actors are still under contract. No one will miss Scarlet. I think Falcon or Bucky will step up and wield the shield for Cap.
The odd one out is Downey. Would Cheadle step up and wear the armour? To the citizens of their "world" they'd not notice, but to the audience, Downey is a big part of the success. Maybe Paltrow as Rescue? Stark also brings the smarts, but he could be replaced by Panther's little sister.

Marvel has absolutely established a very strong, very recognizable brand.  But without Downey, Evans, and Hemsworth, is it still lightning in a bottle?  Can The Avengers continue with a rotating cast of characters/actors?

Or will they go with an alternate universe?  I don't really see that happening, but who knows??

Title: Re: Avengers: Infinity War **SPOILERS**
Post by: Chooch on May 13, 2018, 12:28:15 pm
I think they'll continue to make over a billion rotating in others.  I don't see Disney worried anytime soon.

I agree with them continuing to rotate with new characters.theres still characters like simon Williams and Hercules and she hulk to explore.

PTB, I would LOVE to see HERC and SHE-HULK appear!

And me being a huge fan of Street Level characters....I would flip shit if BLACK KNIGHT showed up.  3D MAN would be great, but I can't see that happening.

Obviously Wasp is on the radar now too. They certainly make out that she's very capable in the new trailer.

Black Knight is one I just can't see happening. How does that translate to live action in this modern setting?

Wonder-Man and She-Hulk I can see happening, especially the latter if they rotate out Hulk.

Namor?

Namor?

We've got aliens, trees, gods, wizards, and racoons, why not a human/merman mutant with ankle wings?  Once they start bringing in all the Fox properties, Namor should be among the first to get screen time.

so if Thanos wiped out half the universe because there wasn't enough resources how come he didnt use the IG to create more resources?

More fun to kill?

Before gathering the gems, his method of killing half the population of a planet had the effect of turning those worlds into a paradise.  Since the method works, he's had no reason to consider alternatives.  He might be spending some time between movies reflecting on his actions and do a Dr. Strange type of reality exploring with the gems.

This was my comment too. Thanos' motives are silly when you remove the worshiping of Death angle.

I really like that explanation.  There may also be some sense that removing is tipping the scales back to sustainability whereas just giving people more of what they overconsume would just lead to more overconsumption.

Smart Hulk would be pretty cool, but Joe Fixit would be ridiculously awesome!  I would love to see a smart arsed, scheming, outsmarting, cunning Hulk.
