Title: DC CW Game Changer. No Spoilers.
Post by: Gardner Grayle on January 15, 2020, 02:39:17 pm
Last night things on the various DCWTV shows changed rather dramatically.  I might give em all another try.  Stargirl is a lock for me.

I'm honestly finding it hard to keep up with them all.
When I've got a choice between Batwoman or Mindhunter I seem to be falling for the  more grown up shows lately. I've gotten so far behind on Flash and Arrow.

I tend to agree.  But I did want to give them another try after the status quo was altered by the Crisis.  So far I haven’t picked up any them again.  Flash is coming up next week.  Putting all the main heroes/shows together had to happen though.  This all tees up Superman next season.  And Green Arrow and the Canaries.  Wish they’d just call it Birds of Prey and be done.

But yeah, Mindhunters.  Awesome.  Too bad they’re on indefinite hiatus.

Definite thumbs up on Mindhunters. I'd live to give Batwoman a chance, but I watched some of the Crisis crossover -- and it didn't give me much reason to watch any of the CW DC shows again.

Well I’m definitely trying Stargirl.  And I’ll give Superman a shot in the fall.  But if Flash can’t hold my attention, then the rest doesn’t stand much chance.

I don't seem to have much longevity with any of the super-shows. Kinda proud that I finished Swamp Thing in hindsight.

Even the Netflix Marvel shows started to drag and I've not finished Iron Fist season 2 or the fucking gawdawful Punisher season 2.

The best superhero shows are not Marvel/DC.

Watched Stargirl on CW this evening and found it very entertaining -- maybe even better than Supergirl season 1. I will periodically tune in to a CW DC show, but usually regret it (I'm not a fan of Berlanti turning the solo vehicles into ensembles).

Stargirl looks like it will follow some of those CW tropes, but in this case it's using actual DC characters -- not making ones up for the show. The only disappointment for me was that it appeared a very minor group of the Injustice Society caused the end of the JSA, but maybe there is more to the story than has been revealed. Oh, and also was alarmed to see the only female in the JSA group photo was apparently Hawkgirl. I guess they can't use Black Canary, and wasn't expecting Wonder Woman, but Power Girl would have nice.

I enjoyed it.  Apparently, there were about ten minutes cut from the first couple of episodes, not for content, but format for commercial TV.  I think that was before they got the CW pickup.  I think I like that it’s isolated from the other CW stuff too.  And from what I gather, we’re getting an Infinity Inc. type lineup of guests like Yolonda Montez, Beth Chappell, and Rick Tyler.  It’s also 13 episodes for a full 1/4 of a year.  Pretty confident putting it on in the summer too.

Someone pointed out in another forum that everyone at the losers table in the cafeteria will make up the new 'JSA'. I guess, then, that was Beth Chapel, Rick Tyler and Yolanda Montez. Apparently they will all be teenagers and not young adults. I had expected Courtney to be the junior member.  So no idea how this Beth Chapel will be connected to Dr. Mid-Nite being that she's still in high school!

Episode 2 of Stargirl has me sold.  This show is twice as good as all the other DCW shows combined.

Even though the show has taken liberties with the ages/origins of 'Infinity, Inc.' the show is much closer to the source material than any other DC show. I don't need a show to slavishly follow what came before, but I don't like when TV shows take so many liberties that barely recognize the character. I'm sure that Geoff Johns being showrunner helps a great deal. He probably never expected 'Stars & Stripes' be seen in live action, but so far, I think the TV show is better than the comic book.

I only wish the series could use more females members of the JSA. The CW basically wasted 'Black Canary', so it would be nice to see a more faithful version show up here. Also, has Power Girl ever been seen in anything outside of a comic book. I know there was a version loosely based on her on JLU as an adult clone of Supergirl. I guess they want to avoid anyone connected to Superman?

This show just makes me smile.

I had to stream episodes 2 and 3 since I"m normally outside till dark -- and it airs kinda early (8:00 PM).

I'm still a bit concerned, though, about the JSA Jrs, but I guess that's all part of the series -- seeing these new inexperienced (and unpowered?) teens inherit these roles.

I’m willing to give it a chance and see where it goes.  JSA jr. might just work.

This show is so incredibly different than any of the other DCW shows, it’s stunning.  Now I’m really looking forward to the HBO Max DC slate.

I've been streaming on Wednesdays -- because I"m never inside in the Summer before 9. But this is the best live action DC TV show since maybe the first season of Wonder Woman. And the reason why is that it honors the source material -- and doesn't try to create something that's DC in name only.

I credit Geoff Johns for that.

Stargirl renewed for season 2 and simultaneously removed from the DC Universe service.  I’d say it’s over for them.  Another casualty of HBO Max I assume.

I've been watching Stargirl because I have the DC service.  I'll probably stop when it moves over.  It's been enjoyable, but between the limitations of live action and low budget it's not especially yanking my crank.  Hopefully they keep the DC service as a comic-only option.

I think it’s well above the rest of the DC CW fare.  I think it’s done well enough that they can sell advertising around it.  I’m thinking it actually becomes the center point of “Arrowverse”.

I"m actually a bit bummed that it's stuck on CW, but obviously DCU will be exiting first run TV series. I would guess it's a matter of time before Titans is moved elsewhere.

But I agree that Stargirl is making the other Arrowverse shows look like dog doo. I don't know if they'll be able to maintain quality after the jump, but I hope.

I think everyone is expecting Jade to show up, but some fans think she may already be on the show. Cindy's best friend is named Jenn Williams -- and she ever wears a locket that features on of Jade's logos (the one similar to Atom's). That would be the cheap way out of avoiding the green skin -- because Jen Williams would probably just wear a ring. And that would also mean less chance of Obsidian. I guess I need to be reminded that despite some of the cast -- this is not Infinity Inc. or even JSA.

That said -- love the Shiv 2-parter. The actress playing Cindy/Shiv is  [rock]. Can't wait for the Brainwave, Jr. episode!

JSA, SSoV, Infinity Inc.  OMG.  This is a little TV heaven.

I'm loving the Injustice Society -- only wish the Wizard hasn't been killed off. I hope they can keep them around for season 2 somehow.

Another great ep.  This show is so tonally different from the other CW fare it’s almost astounding.  I was a little disappointed with the Arrow like fight scene.   [slapfight]

Clearly Henry Jr. isn’t dead.  Just an illusion created by Henry Sr.  Next week, Shining Knight!

The clearly a stunt-woman in a wig was a little obvious.  I do appreciate that Amy Smart's character has some agency now.  Her being clueless was a waste of a good actress.  And is it just me or is the actor that plays the boy look like a forty year old man's head on a boy's body?

Definitely agree about Smart.  Great actress and still hot.

I think Stripsey's son has a similarity to Luke Wilson -- probably helped him ace the role.

I didn't think Henry was dead, dead, but apparently the show wants us to believe he's dead -- as the actor has been stating that this is the end of his arc as far as he knows. It just seems obvious that he'll show up again on the bad side -- which would be an okay, if obvious means of adding drama.

I'm also glad that Courtney's mom was let in on the secret -- it was a bit too shady with Stripesy knowing her daughter is risking her life -- and not sharing the info with her.

I'm thinking the finale will be the new JSA against Solomon Grundy.

Yeah, Kit Harrington said Jon Snow was dead too when he obviously wasn’t on Game of Thrones.  If he was 100% off the show, he wouldn’t be doing so much media.

Stargirl has been a hit in our household. My girls absolutely love it. Scoring Courtney in the DC lego mystery bags was a win too. Now they're acting out the show.

Stargirl producers have put out a warning of more than one after credit scenes for the season finale.

I"m avoiding discussions of the finale until after I watch it on CW tomorrow evening (or Wednesday online).

I enjoyed the ending despite some misgivings.

Icicle survives a fall from a building but then is shattered when he is run over by an SUv? I guess you could say the fall did a lot of damage to his 'ice form'. I also think we lost way too many interesting characters this season -- especially Brainwave, Jr. I guess he had the potential to overshadow Stargirl -- and that may have played a part in his demise. Dragon King was just a really creep, old school villains -- and will be missed. Brainwave Sr. was also an excellent villain. I liked that Grundy was spared -- probably something that will work to the JSA's favor in the future.

I really need to see Jade next season to make up for the loss of Henry.

Shade, Eclipso and Starman in season 2 -- though I don't think that's actually Starman. Who, then, is he?

There’s a lot of setup here.  Maybe we get “tame” Grundy from Infinity Inc. and Starman.  Fiddler is set up.  Gambler is regrouping.  Doubt Dragon King is gone.  Tigress and Sportsmaster escaped I presume, off camera.  Justin looking for the other SSoV.  Eclipso?  Cool.  Shade should be awesome.  But yeah, lotta good villains got wiped out in one season.

You know what bothered me the most this season?  The cat.  After Pat found the Wizards wife’s SUV busted up in the junk yard, and the cat living in it, he should’ve brought her home and adopted her.  Beyond that, I loved S1.  Cant wait for more.
