"A Fish Guy is born"a WIP thread Update April 24th.

Our glorious leader Andy recently commissioned me to make a custom Aquaman II figure from Kingdom Come for him.I promised i would do a WIP Thread if for no other reason than to stop him nagging me how it's coming along hee hee.

Andy wanted me to use the same base figure as i used for mine and basically follow the recipe i used which of course makes it easier to repeat.However since i did mine i've refined a few techniques so hopefully his will be a higher quality than mine is.
The base is a KC Superman,kindly supplied by Andy.Saved me having to track one down.

First step is of course to remove the Cape,Spitcurl,Boot Tops,Belt,any mould seams and any other unwelcome protuberances.Not much at all to see at this point:



Was gonna post phase 2 tonight but my Camera batteries are dead and i can't find any spares.Will obtain some a.s.a.p and post an update.

Stage 2.Got some Epoxy and filled the Cape slots,also with the aid of Tamiya Putty[which is Polyfilla for Plastic people ]filled the"S"on his Chest in as it's not painted on but rather etched into his Chest.Plus filled a few other pinholes,gaps,moulding seams etc.
Then it's sanding,sanding,sanding,sanding and more sanding.A lot of people use their Dremels for sanding and i love my Dremel for lots of purposes.But,when it comes to sanding,especially fine detail sanding i still prefer the old fashioned way.Lot more time consuming but i think it's worth it.
Anyways now i have a blank slate to work on and it's time to start creating a Fish Guy:

Mate i am so anal about sanding it's not funny.Will spend sometimes too long on it and will just sit there and study a piece for ages looking for blemishes.Usually tend to use 2-3 grades of Paper for every piece.Then once i prime i'm usually at it again.

It can make the difference between a master piece and a sketchy piece, though.

That's so profound and so right.It's all the little details that make a world of difference in the end.

That's why i like to get rid of the seam lines from the moulds and the peg holes if it's possible.Adds to the whole aesthetic for me.

I guess working with those KC bases will do that to you.

Well I've finally started on my first custom and before I even got undeway I noticed mould lines down each side of my base figure.

Out came the files.

I guess it's just a habit formed from doing metal gaming miniatures. And you're right about the priming. I find once I've primed something it really brings out the blemishes I missed earlier....so it's off again with the rotary tool, mini-file or sand paper

Those mould lines drive me nuts,like you i have a background in gaming miniatures,military figures and 1/6 Resin Kits.It was always one of my first tasks getting rid of all those damned seams.
