Title: "Kirby Your Enthusiasm" Custom Contest Planning & Discussion - CLOSED
Post by: NiteOwl on August 16, 2011, 07:17:53 am
Hello fellow Customizers!!!

We here at the custom boards would like to see how much interest there would be in staging a Custom Comp based on the work of Jack "King" Kirby.

Basically the comp can be any creation or co-creation that Jack Kirby had a hand in creating. Also, it can be in any scale that you wish (MU,ML, DCUC etc..)

So what we are looking for to start proceedings is to get a show of hands before we get started to put time and effort behind the comp.

Ideally we would like to start it off on the 1st of Sept and then give entrants a 10 week time frame.

So, just post your interest after this post and tell any other board members from any other boards you can think of telling.

Thanks,

NiteOwl

By the way, NiteOwl's idea for the title of the Comp is "Kirby Your Enthusiasm", which I think is extremely cool.  [thumbs up]

I was going to suggest "Kirby or Not Kirby, That Is The Question", but Nite's is better.

I'm in.

I'm in.

Does it have to be Kirby's representation of the character, or just one he created? Meaning, if someone tweaked his/her costume a little can we do that version of the costume as long as it's still a Kirby character?

Yes, FMS that's fine.

Good feedback so far, all the other board members who have read this should sign up!! Ideally we would like about 10 or so entrants before the comp. starts.

Hey NiteOwl, Andy told me about this. I am kind of on hiatus from customizing right now, but if there is any other way I can participate, judging, researching, etc., I would be more than happy to help. Let me know.

I found my base figure and a coveted add-on piece.

Very excited.  It's meant to be a final surprise after 10 weeks, no peeking?

Yes Doc, big reveal after the 10 week comp. We usually just send the pics to Andy's pm.

Previous comps have run that way. Don't know what the feeling is now, or what is considered "good form".

I think the surprise element still works best. I like the idea of clicking on a link to see all the submissions without knowing what they are beforehand.
From memory, there is the option to add w.i.p pics with your final submission, but most folks generally do that in their custom thread after the comp anyway.

No problem- I like the surprise!   I have my pieces and can start in Sept.  I picked a goal that will be realistic for 10 weeks and is a figure I really want.

We just need a few more people to sign up!

I'm fine, thanks for asking FB. It's actually a combo of work and this whole DC Universe relaunch. I have little time right now and I've kind of lost my desire to do new customs being that everything I had planned no longer really exists. Oh well, I can still enjoy what you guys do.

I agree. I'm just starting in the custom world, it's the work of you guys that I look for inspiration and admiration.

I hope you get back FP. And I wouldn't worry too much about the DC reboot, all those characters are still there, somewhere. I know I'm an odd example, but I'm actually increasing my DC subscriptions...  [dunno]

I don't usually display my custom HeroClix here (I guess because I don't consider them "action figures"), but as I just finished a custom Clix of Kirby's very first creation for Timely Comics, I thought it appropriate to share. (This is NOT my entry in the contest.)

I got the Emma Frost ML version from NiteOwl - thanks buddy! - BUT - I don't want to use the head, but the head is a hinge joint and doesn't just pop off. Anyone have any suggestions for an absolute newbie on how to do a head swap on this?

Can't help you myself with the ML Joints unfortunately.I have no experience at all with them,i'm sure Jack,Owl,Stars or FMS has experience with them though.

Looking at the fig right now, it is a hinge joint to an extent however I think their is a peg inside the head. Try some hot water in a container and give it 5 minutes and then it should just pop off.

Fill  a microwave-proof coffrr cup with water and boil it in the mi rowave for 3 minutes. Take Emma and place her in the hot water. After about1 minute, you should be abvle to pry the head off of the figure without any breakage.

I boil the kettle, tip the boiling water in a mug, upend the figure in the mug for 3-4 minutes, then give it a heave. Be careful though as the figure can get hot (obviously)

Well, complete change of plans. I was struggling to find a head that was going to work on the Emma body and then got a flash about an entirely different character which I've got all the parts for and will be starting tomorrow.

Hobby stores sell decal sheets that can go in an inkjet printer. It looks like a white sheet of photo paper. You don't even have to use it in a printer, you can just cut out the shape you want then apply it.

You can also use soft vinyl, the kind they make shower curtains out of. I got a big piece for next to nothing from Lincraft. It's what I used for Gladiator's chest emblem and the lightning bolt zig-zag pattern down Thundra's legs.

I went paint shopping yesterday. Games Workshop was a bit of a bust, but Toyworld came through for me - three colours of Tamiya paint in the shades I needed. The girls behind the counter thought I was a bit odd because I had a reference pic on my phone I kept looking at.

Today - setting up a makeshift spray booth in the garage!

I've given up on trying to find that can of Skull White I had, so I'm going to get a new one today and then hopefully get the undercoat started today. Unfortunately the centre I need to go to has a "Build A Bear Workshop" which Miss 10 has been dying to go to all holidays so I will have to take a Build A Bear break before I can start.  :P

Also, I'm not sure I'm happy with the head I had chosen. I can do everything else without it but may try to get a different one.

I also have one costume element that I have no idea what I going to do about. I really don't want to have to sculpt it.  ???

Yeah, like Dozy, let me know if I can help.

I've got two more "Green Stuff" coming from the US and one's a spare. Should be here this week.

Alternatively, I've bought from this guy a few times. It's the roll version of 'Green Stuff' which I don't like as much as the 'bars', but ultimately does the same job.

Use a tool or something really small to carefully press the edges of the tape down so there's no gaps where it meets the figure. Use the side edge of a toothpick point if you have nothing else. Paint will find it's way into the tiniest gaps so make the effort to press it down well.

Another tip. Imagine a square, then draw a horizontal line through it. Now you have two halves. Imagine the top half is the masking the bottom half is the part you're painting. If you spray at a balanced angle the paint will naturally sit better than if you do it the other way. If the masking was on the bottom and the bit you're painting is on top, then gravity will be against you and there's a much greater chance of the paint bleeding under the masking if there are gaps you missed.

Also, before you spray, check and double check that there's nothing exposed that you don't want painted. Sounds silly, but when paint is in mist form it can get in anywhere.

No, my brain and my explanations are sometimes not in synch.

Take a piece of masking tape and stick it horizontally on a wall.
Now if you were to spray the area above the tape, there's a chance some paint might bleed down and in under the top of the tape.
If you were spraying the area of wall under the tape, there's less chance the paint will go 'up' under the masking tape.

Thinking about it with a figure. If you masked off a figure's legs to paint the boots. You'd want the figure standing upright when you paint it. If you held the figure upside down there's a greater chance the paint would get under the masking and on the legs.

So to sum up, keep the masking above the area you want to paint if you can.

- Also, spray in waves <----across----> the figure. Don't point and blast.

- I also don't stand the figure in place and paint. I put on a latex glove and hold the figure and spray it with the other hand. This way you can turn and rotate the figure with ease.

Don't rush it,make sure it's well dry first.

I've just about finished sculpting, just a last little bit that i'm gonna go finish off shortly. Then when i get back next week final sanding[yes, again] and then on to the Painting. [yess]

Yep, will do. I checked on it this morning and am pretty sure I won't need to do another coat, and this was the biggest amount of colour. I'm going to give it tonight as well to dry fully and then look at taking the masking off tomorrow morning.

The bigger nerves will come next, because I have to mask over what I've just painted to do the second colour.  :-\

Thankfully it's not warm here at the moment so it all seems to be drying quickly.

This is a bugbear of mine because you have to be pretty precise. Most of the time I spray one colour and paint the other. For example, Gladiator's "red" was sprayed and his blue pants were painted on. The red sits slightly higher than the unpainted area so you can gently nudge the second colour up against the 1st without going over it.

I have three colours to do. I really want to spray the second colour and then paint the third. Will see how I go I guess. If I totally screw it up I am still in a position to start again. *eek*

Nope, it can be nervewracking stuff if you've never done it before. Little extra preparation will pay off. Keep it up!

Okay, took the masking off from the first colour and I'm not unhappy. There are a couple small leaks but nothing I'm going to cry over for my first attempt.

I am going to have to do a small touch up of undercoat on one section of leak before I go on the next colour, so that's today's job.  [thumbs up]

I am actually making a custom.  jaw_drop

I must confess to being very excited to see what you're up to!

If you have some small bleeds, you can also use some sandpaper to gently sand the paint off. Use very fine sandpaper though. Something like P1000 or 1200 (granularity).

That's one of us!

Get your shit together man. You've got a title to defend.

Did my second colour tonight. Moment of truth tomorrow as this is the point where things could go wrong leakage wise.

Also did some trouble-shooting on a design issue I had, and I think I came up with a good idea.

If we are officially extending the deadline, should we make an announcement?

I made a trip to "Hobby Town" in the Melbourne CBD today and got a couple things I need. They also had the transparent printable decal paper, so I have options now. I expect to get a good deal done tomorrow.  [thumbs up]

So far I have received entries from TT and FMS. How many are we expecting to get over the line?
